As one of the group who repainted Efficient over 50 yrs ago I can say that we copied the original Barclay paintwork exactly having taken tracings before rubbing down. The only exception was the sandboxes where the signwriter lined each panel separately when it should have been carried around the corners. We used Tecaloid paint - Fir Green?. I have attached some 'before and after' photos.

If I'm not mistaken, Moorbarrow is now staying at EVR for the year as additional cover; Gwili having just confirmed the purchase of GWR 5521, better known as L150.

    News:
Spa Valley Railway stalwart, AB 2315 Lady Ingrid has now moved to the Mid-Suffolk Railway as a permanent resident.

She was offered up to move elsewhere some time ago as Spa Valley couldn’t offer regular work, and I believe she isn’t allowed to work into Groombrudge station due to her short wheelbase (someone correct me if I’m wrong)

2315 is unusual as I believe she’s the only 0-4-0ST in the uk with a coal bunker - a preservation-era modification. EDIT: Not the only one!

I believe the plan is for her to be in steam over the MSR’s Easter gala, alongside a fellow AB, 0-6-0 Swordfish and Manning Wardle 1210 Sir Berkeley which is visiting from the Middleton Railway.

I saw Jonnie say something to the effect of it being four-coupled prohibited it from reaching Groomsbridge.

Sadly with such sweeping statements of the kind "she’s the only ya de da . . . " its easy to disprove such - try this page for starters (a barclay 0-4-0ST shunting engine with a coal bunker - not sure as built but certainly pre preservation as the first photo with the late Joe Walker at Millom Ironworks shows:

    https://www.nwemail.co.uk/features/...id-survived-end-of-millom-ironworks/#gallery0

click through the photos to see its bunker better at the L&H Rly

Thanks for correcting me there. I do remember reading a few years back that there is no accurate prototype for ‘Percy’ from TTTE as no four-coupled saddle tank was built with a bunker in the UK. (Assuming that source was correct)

However I didn’t realise others had been converted.

Moss Bay at Foxfield is a 0-4-0 saddle tank with a rear bunker. There will be others, that's just the first one that springs to mind.

On a different note, is anyone on here involved at Aln Valley Railway?

Something has just reminded me that last year, someone involved with the railway told me that their loco dept is trying to reduce usage of Hudswell Clarke Richboro (not sure if its actually out of ticket now) as it's a bit small/old/fragile - I forget the exact details. Given that their normal operating train is 2x MK1s I'd be suprised if it was too small.. does anyone know what the situation with it is?

The load might only be 2 coaches but the gradient is 1 in 100 pretty much all the way - that kind of thing will soon sort the wheat from the chaff whatever you hand behind the loco

    From the current Traction Ads:
    FOR SALE - STANDARD GAUGE.
    Ex S & L Manning Wardle 0-6-0ST loco number 1762 of 1910 Dolobran.

Half way through a very extensive overhaul. Can be viewed by appointment only at the GCR(N) Ruddington. A rare opportunity to acquire a versatile and powerful 0-6-0 locomotive with 16" x 22" cylinders.

This loco has all its components and it is at the rolling chassis stage of restoration.

Someone please buy it and bring it up North!!

Someone please buy it and keep it at Ruddington. After all the years in the workshop, they ought to get some use out of it.

The gradient up into Lionheart is 1 in 60 I was told, but its only a few hundred yards long. Film I have seen doesn't suggest any problems with this.

It is in sight of the end of its boiler ticket and I would say its had a relatively charmed time of it. But it does appear to be dimensionally similar to Jennifer which has had a reported wobble so if if its reduced usage is because its Soup Course Unfriendly, that wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility.

I think it’s a similar design but smaller, IIRC. Jennifer has been at the Flour Mill for some work to rectify that same issue apparently.

1 in 100 is hardly taxing with a load of 2 mark 1’s. Let’s say 70 tons and 35 ton of loco. My guessing stick works that out at a required TE of a tad over 3,900 lbf. I’d have no problem agreeing to one of our 12” locos being used on that.

I'm with Steve. We routinely take 2 Mk1s up a route which includes a quarter of a mile of 1 in 36 with a 12" loco. It requires the crew to be awake, (it's prudent to hit the bottom with a reasonable fire and a fairly full glass) but it's perfectly do-able. Our 14" locos will take three Mk1s (so approximately 100 tons trailing load) up the same hill.

Anyone struggling with 2 mk1s with anything bigger than a 12" either has a really poor loco, is having a really bad day or just isn't doing it right.

We allow Fenchurch (with 13” cylinders) 85 tons up our line, which finishes with about 1/2 mile of 1 in 55 (after about seven miles of on and off climbing mostly at 1 in 75). On test it did 95 tons, including restarting on the 1 in 55.
