For fire risk when the diesel has to work DB normally place it inside the steam loco, if it’s replacing the generator car or for leaf fall precaution it’s normally at the back.

 

Hells teeth, that's a handsome bit of kit sitting in the sun.

If the fire risk situation warrants diesel assistance the loco is normally coupled behind the tender. It doesn’t look too intrusive if one of the two Belmond liveried engines are used.

 

Just seen a video of today's train. That was the correct formation - Clan Line, Diesel, POB and 12 Belmond vehicles. No diesel at the rear but there must have been one to bring the ECS into Victoria.

I returned to my panning location of two weeks ago, but instead of 1/30th of a second, I chose 1/3200th in order to capture this lovely machine without messing up the photo too much!

Nice, but you had another foot of buffer beam to play with yet!

 

That seems pretty minor, but it would have been a good case for taking in a slightly wider view at the time and then doing a precise crop in the editor.

 

My camera has inbuilt software that stops it taking photos of diesel locos. In this case I lost the foot of buffer beam because the photo was very slightly crooked and I had to crop that out.

Either that or the anti-diesel software threw a fit when it saw what was coupled behind Clan Line: I had to plug therapy software into the camera when I got home.

@gricerdon Don, a few days back somewhere here, mention was made that NR had downgraded the fire risk in most parts to yellow. I can't find that post, but I think it sort of left some discretion re diesel assistance. Other will know better than me.

The downside is that so far, none of the forecast Easter rain has fallen here in Kent. But we did have a full night of rain, 15 mm, here overnight on 14/15 April. And showers are forecast in Kent today and tomorrow.

Updating that, the latest BBC weather forecast shows a belt of heavy rain crossing Kent early on Wednesday morning. Fingers crossed!

12 mm rain at home in Kent last night/first thing this morning. Mainy steady rain over six hours or more, but one quite long spell of heavier rain.

Cloudy and gentle rain at times still falling on/off until very recently. Hopefully that means most lineside vegetation is nicely wet and will take some days to dry out.

Rainfall in England in the first twenty days of April has averaged 38% of normal. My impression is --higher than that south of the Trent and Mersey, lower than that north. Forecast looks pretty dry and warm.
