Swanage Railway General Discussion

At least one [Victorian themed] event scheduled for the nearest Saturday - 17th May - to celebrate 140 years since opening on 20th May 1885. Have not been informed about specific details though.
Not heard of anything else specific as yet. But there is still time I suppose.
I guess there's lots to do and, like many other organisations, too few people to do them.

So guess the kitchen carriage will have a temporary mains feed from the station, rather than a generator, to cook the curries for the gala, and be more cost effective than buying from a nearby restaurant?

 

Really good news about the refreshed kitchen car and the railway looking at brining back limited supply of hot food.

The idea of sitting it in the bay, or even the head shunt and allowing people to pick up food and walk to the main set seems like a very good lower cost way of providing 'added services'. Also allows 5 cars of day sets to be used and not needing to take out 64 seats.

How is the Kitching car powered on the move? Does it have an extra generator ?

How are the cream teas done normaly? Are they prepared in the kitchen car already?

 

Looks like more of an event for dignitaries and guests rather than the public

Having reread this post a few times I have no idea what point you are trying to make.
Too many visiting locos?
Not enough?
Why does where the trains operate during the Gala increase the cost of the visitors when it has been said like every other year many will be able to come in by rail?

Certainly from more diesel oriented forums 8 locos in not seen as excessive and by some a little light. Still after a few beers I doubt if they will notice

 

End of the line! The Class 121 waits at the limit of Swanage Railway operations alongside Network Rail signal PW5752 - Bridge 3 over the River Frome - before returning to Swanage on 24th April.

I could be wrong but I read it to mean that the original poster is suggesting that the lack of running between Norden and the mainline at the gala will prevent the usual rail moves therefore making many visitors and 4 coaches of VEP very expensive to bring in by road...

Of course, as written elsewhere, we know that the connection is planned in use for the convoys, so the visitors will stay at their normal (rail moved) costs...

I'm guessing that's why the post reads unusually?

From pmilford's post and photo trains can now go over the repaired bridge to get to the gala.

But can the published gala time table be updated

so some trains can get to the river Frome boundary over the repaired bridge, rather than just stop at Norden?

 

The Diesel Gala is planned as a Swanage to Norden gala only. No passenger trains will go 'over the road'.

 

The bridge has been repaired but a TSR remains so no passenger use until final works completed

For once (as it turned out annoyingly) I could not be bothered to take a camera down the town. So had to walk back to get these two of Kitchen Car 1937.
Maybe it is an homage to Concorde AD (with its SQ livery on the port side and BA on the starboard). Or maybe just a paint saving exercise.

 

Ah, I remember her well. I started working at Rolls-Royce, Bristol in 1979 and shortly after was shown around the Brabazon facility.
Inside the huge building were 3 BA Concorde aircraft. I thought they were stunning - and I still do.

New post on a communication manager for 33 k ish ontop of the recent CEO job … that’s a fair chunk of new spending considering it was only a few months /year they had to reduce staff levels.

Hopefully this will further get the message of the railway out, which hasn't been as good I personally don't think since they stopped doing timetable leaflets for tourists all over Dorset

 

Who says it’s new spending, and not reallocation of other funds?

 

Not unusual when an organisation pares back to control costs and then when costs more in control to gradually expand recruiting much more selectively to where perceived added value will be.

Maybe I am the only one who sees the irony, (even for some of the posts on NP) complaining about a Communication Manager vacancy in a post that complains about the railway's lack of communication.

 

Not to mention that if the role is full time, £33k is not a particularly great salary for a responsible role
