We have an LMS hopper and wish to repaint it into an authentic LMS livery, but have so far not found any details .. Is there anyone out there who can help us?

I'd suggest grey down to the bottom of the solebars, with white lettering. have a look at a March topic -"Lowmac wagon at Peak Rail" and you will see a dreadful but useful pic of an LMS plate wagon.

Actually this isn't quite as simple as it looks. It doesn't match the pictures of LMS ballast hoppers in "LMS wagons volume 1" by Essery - or any other hopper wagons in that book. I'd suggest LMS in large letters on the left hand three of the large vertical side panels, with ED in slightly smaller letters on the hopper below the M and S.

If anyone from Oxford Publishing reads this, can I suggest a reprint of Mr Essery's works, which are getting rare and expensive.

I can only see two LMS hoppers on the E&B website and one is a 1948 example so would be in BR livery from new, so I presume you're referring to the other (1947) one, 158389?

At that late stage I imagine all LMS wagons would have been bauxite (possibly with bauxite solebar) with 4" or possibly even 3" (wartime economy measure, not sure if it continued post-war) lettering in the lower left corner.

Braking type didn't come into it as far as LMS livery was concerned, that was a BR idea. For LMS livery the colour is more to do with the period. And the large 'LMS' letters were dispensed with around 1936.

However, this is from memory (and no I wasn't around then) so I am guessing... but one of the Essery volumes (which I don't have to hand) does have a good section on liveries.

"ex-LMS No. 158389. 20T. Built 1947 by Metro Cammell. Has a central door and is used for ballasting. Requires repaint / minor plate work. Photo: (c) Charles Boylan" from our website (should have included this on the original post!)

The other hopper has now bitten the dust owing to needing all the platework replacing, and much of the angle.

The chassis will be used, however, to provide an underframe for the cattle wagon...
