The salvation of the 2 Taylor Hubbard 10-ton cranes on the Mid Hants was the sale by the railway to the owners of DS1580. There was no way that the railway could have stood the year-on-year costs - private owners take a different view, of course.

I agree wholeheartedly, a steam crane has all of the costs of a steam loco but very little of the revenue-earning potential, and therein lies the nub of the issue. That being said, most heritage railways (and certainly those which are registered museums) have constitutions or Articles of Association which will include an intent to preserve and display relevant historical artefacts for the benefit of future generations. It is not especially difficult nor particularly expensive to keep a crane as a non-operating exhibit.

I am unaware of the efforts made to find another home for 95222 but despite having my finger pretty firmly on the pulse of the UK steam crane scene I was unaware that it was under threat. It has been reported that it was offered to other railways but it would be interesting to know how much effort was put into this and how word was spread.

There are parallels with the near scrapping of MP21 in 2011, although 95222 is not remotely as important to the historical record as is MP21.

From waht I have seen, no effort or advert at all despite the prtestations of some noisy GCRN people. I get the impression it was a financailly driven dispoals, not driven by the deisre to see it prederved anywhere. Sorry for the poor typing, I get a bit wound up and it doesnt always come otu right
