    No5, 3809… shame Ring Haw couldn’t make it…

Wonder if Newstead’s owners would mind it being painted black and carry Ring Haw nameplates for a few days… (I jest). Though Newstead will be a very good substitute for Ring Haw

Why black? Ring Haw was green when it arrived at the NNR straight out of industrial service. Photo from April 1971.

My memories of it in the 1980s is in black

Don’t think it was returned to green until the 2000s

Over on the NNR FB page it’s been reported that Betton Grange has arrived back on the line.

I noticed some of the footage was when Newstead was at the NVR. Listening to it, it seems hard to believe now that when I first visited the NNR it was just five years old.

I wonder if there is scope for another deal between the NNR and 76084 group, with the NNR helping to fund the overhaul in exchange for exclusive use of the locomotive?

First time visitor to the NNR on 6th August. We were very impressed, all the people we spoke to were helpful and keen to ensure we had a lovely day. The stations are very well kept and Holt looks like it has been there for ever. Good variety of motive power with Betton Grange, Austerity and DMU. My wife and my daughter loved the suburban MK1 stock sampling the different accomodation of first, second open and second compartments. It was great to see the railway busy with families all having fun. Well done to all the team contributing to the NNR. IMG_20250806_161656.jpg IMG_20250806_133030.jpg

Timetables with allocations up for the 'Festival on Rails' as well as the Gala at the end of the month. Going to be an all industrial fest next weekend with Wissington, Ashington No. 5, Newstead and 18 on the roster.

I thought that a supporter of the railway bought a majority share in it. Is there even an owners group now?

I was under the impression that the 76084 group was certainly still in existence

Just announced on Facebook that Ashington No. 5's visit has been postponed to next season to give more time for running in.

First weekend looks like its been replaced by the WD, Newstead/Austerity No. 18 from Tuesday-Thursday and with Wissington replacing it over the second weekend.

Following that link reveals this bit of info :
    * The hoped-for visit of Ashington No 5, one of the locomotives that worked trains when the line reopened in 1975, has been postponed until next season to allow additional time for running in following her recent overhaul. We should like to thank our colleagues at the North Tyneside Steam Railway for their tremendous efforts to allow the engine to return for this event but we have agreed that rather than rush her back to service at an intensive special event, she will return to her old haunts next year once running in is complete.
