82045 The way ahead?

In the last few years of steam, some 82xxxs were based at Nine Elms. I suspect that is the reason for the lamp irons. Someone better informed may well correct me!

 

The lamp irons on the front platform and the top of the smokebox door on 82045 are to the design fitted to Standards allocated to the Southern Region. So, if you are doing a job, you do it all correctly.

 

All she wants is an SR shedplate to go with those SR lamp irons! If she were to be fitted with WR lamp irons at some point, I'd gladly let her carry my replica 82E shedplate .

The 82XXX class were the only BR Standard tank locomotives to carry more than one livery. Although all of them were originally turned out in lined black, those examples that worked on the Western Region were repainted in green after overhaul. As 82045 was destined for the WR had it been built as planned in 1956, it was decided that the loco when finished should appear in the attractive Swindon-inspired livery of dark green, lined out in orange and black.

So how do SR-designed lamp irons fit in with that scenario?

 

I have had some correspondence from one of the 82045 volunteers explaining the volunteer team put in extra shifts to get 82045 ready for The Great Gathering at Derby. Hat tip to them all. Well done.

The Lamp Irons and the Shed plate were explained by std tank in an earlier post. They are easily removed, and almost certainly will be, during 82045s working life.

 

Green liveried 82005, 82006, 82020, 82021 and 82033 were all allocated to70A Nine Elms for part of their life. Other green liveried Std 3 2-6-2 tanks were allocated to 72A Exmouth Junction at some time.

 

Fair enough, but 82005, 82006, 82020, 82021 and 82033 only went to the SR in May 1965, and all bar 82021 were withdrawn in September 1965. The point I'm making is that the website suggests we're re-creating 82045 as it would have been built for the WR in 1956 if the order had gone ahead, rather than if it had spent a few months in the SR after the end of steam in the WR. If so, it just seems odd to use SR lamp irons , but I'm not losing any sleep over it!

 

If 82045 is to be "as it would have been built for the WR in 1956" then it would surely be turned out in lined black - Swindon only painted them green at a later date.

At Grosmont we have 75029 which still has its WR lamp irons across the buffer beam - however they had been turned through 90 degrees when it left the WR so that they now take non WR lamps.
