Oh dear, they aren't really giving out very helpful vibes at the moment, are they?

 

Sadly I’m not surprised at all, given their secret squirrel attitude in recent times.
Maybe it’s no coincidence that you’re now getting the Royal visitors, when not many years back it used to be the A1 Trust?

 

I might be being a bit too generous, but they're probably a bit busy trying to get North Road sorted out for the end of September at the moment.

“Today was a very special day for us all at 72010 HENGIST. We have been the very proud recipients of a visit by His Royal Highness Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. His Highness was given a presentation about our activities and a tour of CTL's factory. He then spent time examining the various components of the locomotive and asking questions about our work. He even asked what kind of paint we were using on the driving wheel. We got the impression that he spent more time with us than was originally planned, as he was so interested”

Sadly not, having been loco support crew at the 1975 event, this one just didn’t appeal - way too many diesels, even multiples of the same class.

 

1975 was a proper celebration, with examples of the heritage steam existence despite the efforts of those running the railway authorities of only a few years earlier!
At least now we can demonstrate that Britain has still got the skills to build similar engineering projects.

 

In stark contrast to mainland Europe where knowledge, skills and experience are being lost - I'm thinking especially of Meiningen here. In France there is now no legislation covering locomotives with copper fireboxes, so they cannot be steamed.

 

Do we know why the copper firebox has been forbidden there ?

 

I was told that there is now no legislation covering them. There aren't that many anyway and that may have something to do with it. Chapelon didn't like copper fireboxes because of the high pressures he required. The Nord 230D that used to be at the NVR is one locomotive affected. Steel fireboxes predominate in France; the French are almost in disbelief that most of our mainline locos have copper fireboxes!

 

The set up for the Great Gathering is looking good! Hope the stall gets lot of visitors and some more members/contributors.

Hengist Locomotive Works Open Day at CTL Seal Sheffield is Saturday 11th April 2026.

Good to see the near-completed bogie displayed at TGG stall.

 

I see from social media that HRH the Duke of Gloucester has become patron. Which is excellent news.
