Please dont take what im going to say as truth as i have only heard it from "around the yard" but wasnt the problem with the bogie something to do with the lubrication being calibratted for 25mph running , not 50mph . so how would they test if the bogie is spot on in the yard?

Like i say , i dont know how much truth is in that but just wondering.

no, the bogie fault was nothing to do with lubrication

what ever the cause of the problem, all that maters is that the loco didnt sustain serious damage after all running a hot box can be caused by any number of things, all it takes is for a pad to move and you get no oil feed even at 25 mph you could still run the white metal and in br days an engine running its bearings was quite an often failure
as far as i can think there is no setting as such on bogies that you would adjust, except for increasing the strands on the pad to increase the flow oh and doing the normal checks on the boxes to make sure that there isnt water present when you oil up

Dan, you are correct but I wonder if Martin meant the wick strands/tails on the base of the pad?

Martin, if you reduce the strands then you reduce the feed rate, to increase the feed you add more tails.

The bogie problem was absolutely, utterly, completly NOTHING to do with lubrication.

The lubrication issues were with the mechanical cylinder lubricators; their drive mechanism, anti-carbonisers and restrictors.

Thats true about reducing or increasing the number of tails but only for the felt thrust pads on the front face of the underkeeps as these tails are fitted seperatley, then the felt pad fixed in place with brass screws over the top.

The number of tails on the back of the main oil pads are fixed by the manufacturer as they are weaved in during production. Although i guess you could cut some off if you really wanted to

Several, ironically, in his last post:-

"O.V.S woulds not be happy with the apparent assumption that he was a tyrant and overpowering with other guys! I am sure.

And. When did the magnificent 7 reduce below that number?

i.e the last seven original condition Bulleids in service."

I’m sure at some point in time. The times will be posted on Wessex Rail Gen. Then we can all have the times.

34070 Manston was towed by 37706 from Eastleigh Works to the Swanage Railway today. There was some sustained 45mph running (maximum speed for Bulleid locomotives - tender first). The rectification carried out by Swanage Railway fitters; to the bogie axleboxes and cylinder lubrication system, was a complete sucess.

Manston will be running on the Swanage Railway in August - there is some routine maintenance to be done now.
