While in the area, on Sunday, to film 5043 on the Worcester Shakey, I made a little detour to catch Scotsman heading up Eardington with the 13:00 run, which was preceded by a little horsin' around from a couple of the locals. I hope you enjoy the video :)

Due to the DMU being at the Greatest Gathering, 1450 will be operating a two coach auto train on Saturday.
Note the steam/diesel allocation is different from the normal Table D.

    Hello,
I've posted this on the GWSR thread too but as it relates to SVR locos someone here may know:

I’m just catching up with reading some railway magazines from earlier this year and in Heritage Railway’s article about the GWSR's Cotswold Festival of Steam there is the line ‘Both SVR locomotives double-headed with no.7714 inside for operational reasons.’
I’m used to ‘operational reasons’ on the big railway but can anyone clarify what was the actual reason here for 7714 running inside the 4MT? I know it was GWR tradition that the pilot loco was inside the train engine but I'm assuming that's not it in this case.
    Thanks!

If I had to guess I'd say it's related to the different levels of brake vacuum used by GWR and BR locomotives.

It shouldn’t make any difference as the train pipe vacuum will be governed by the lower level of the Standard. What will come into effect, though, is the retaining valve on the GWR locomotives which will change over when the brake is applied and the air pump on the GWR loco will create vacuum on the chamber side which is governed to 23” and the loco brake won’t fully release when 21” is created as the retaining valve won’t change back to the running position. Running with the release valve cracked would avoid this but mean the GW loco would not respond to a vacuum brake application so would be better placed inside.

This Saturday (9th August), I'm planning to enjoy a ride on the 12:30 DMU service from Kidderminster for a full round trip to Bridgnorth and back. Any thoughts as to how crowded this service will be and any other observations about the DMU service worth noting?

I noticed the previous DMU service arrives at Kidderminster at 1122, is it likely to be available for boarding at any time between 1122 and 1230, or will it be going off to a siding or something? I found the working timetables but they currently only go up to Friday; however, judging by last Saturday it looks like the DMU will sit in P2 from 1122 to 1230.
Edit: Does anyone know when the WTT for Saturday 9th will appear?

I've travelled the line many times before but never on a DMU. :)

GWR steam braked locos (57xx, 45xx, 2251, 90xx, 2301 and others) are not fitted with retaining valves as that item is only relevant on vacuum only locos. That said driver vigilence is required to ensure that the loco steam brake does release after an automatic application made by the vacuum side of the brake valve or by the train pipe vacuum being reduced in any other way.

Yes, I've just seen the traffic notice saying the DMU is not available. Disappointing, but it's good to have all the information available so I've got a few days to work out what to do; I'll probably just reschedule for 16th or 23rd August.

And hopefully by then we'll be running more than just one steam.

Thanks. Hopefully that will prove as good a thing as all the advice and information we received has led us to believe.
