One loco which seemed not to get a lot of attention at The Greatest Gathering was 73129. It did have several more prestigious neighbours including two Merchant Navies. I admit to not giving it much attention myself, only belatedly noticing that it has Caprotti valve gear. There was a panel beside it referring to the Standard Five Fund, but I have found nothing about that Fund online apart from some WayBackMachine captures from some years ago such as https://web.archive.org/web/2015081...ndrailway-butterley.co.uk/73129/caprotti.html

https://www.midlandrailway-butterley.co.uk/steam-locomotives/class-5mt/ tells me "This locomotive is owned by Derby City Museums and Art Gallery and long term lease to the Midland Railway Trust."
Where does the Standard Five Fund fit in? Are they actively seeking money?

Why anyone would look at another boring bullied over one of the nosiest engines in preservation is beyond me.

sadly, I think 73129 was very tired at the end of her last overhaul, and a public body like a council would not be able to justify the spend required to overhaul her.

Indeed, but there appears to be a Standard Five Fund and I was hoping someone could provide information about that.

I'm sure that people who like Bulleids would happily look an as many "boring Bulleids" as they could, given the chance. Don't be so dismissive of others peoples preferences.

Prefer Jarvises to Bulleids myself, but each to their own!

For those who find some steam locomotives boring and given that TGG wasn't exactly a celebration of the MR just because this event was hosted in Derby, the event displayed :

    2 GWR - 4930 & 6023
    6 LMS - 13268, 44932, 45596, 45627(45699), 46115 & 46203
    2 SR - 35018 & 35028
    4 LNER - 60007, 60103, 60163 & 60532
    3 BR - 73129, 82045 & 92214
    4 Pre-grouping - Locomotion, FR20, 1000 & 1054

It is now dawning on me that I probably only saw about half of those :(

The Midland Railway has alluded to something kicking off post greatest gathering:

Hopefully it will entail crossheads without union link arms being fitted! I am looking forward to seeing it out.

A true lover of steam would not have found any of the steam locos on display boring.

Unless "boring" in this instance refers to the sheer ubiquity of Bulleid Pacifics? After all, how many LNER Pacifics have survived?*

    *60163 doesn't count.

Well, as a member of the BBLS I wouldn't dream of it - but Dai Woodham did manage to cause a huge imbalance of represented locomotives compared to the LNER/ER especially, who seemed to be pretty ruthless with the oxy-acetylene...

Merely a statement of fact: some may seem the sheer number of ex-SR Pacifics as "boring".

Agreed it's a statement of fact - and circumstances. The lack of LNER engines, discounting big Pacifics(!) - is unfortunate but that was because only one LNER engine finished up at Barry. As someone who was there at the time, I can tell you it was a matter of grab what you could while you could and you were rather limited as to choice. While not the biggest fan of Bulleid Pacifics (that's not saying there's anything wrong with them, only that I had no previous experience of them) their preservation numbers are entirely accidental. The question though is: if not a Bulleid Pacific, what else would you have preserved?

    Thomson A2/1-2-3 one of each.
Rebuild one into tree cylinder compound and one into two cylinder compound and then compare to Britania . and a 9f

    A V3 ,L1, J50 Tank, a B17 an 03/01 2-8-0... would add a V4 and a P1 but these didnt last until the end.

I don't remember seeing any of those at Barry.

If we're talking about pre-1968 or thereabouts, I too have a wish list. But they'd all gone by then.

I know the 60's were a wild time what with the psychedelic drugs on offer but I really don't think Dai Woodhams could have supplied your needs @Hermod ;-)

I saw nearly all of them but I don't remember seeing the Midland Compound or the Hall, despite being there on all three days. (I was also there briefly on the Thursday after arriving on the Pendolino, but some time was wasted unloading us all through one doorway, loading us all onto the Elizabeth Line train on the test track, running that up and down, and finally unloading us, again through one doorway. By then I was ready for my dinner.)

Are 73129 and 71000 the only Caprotti locos preserved in Britain?
