I notice there are 4 trains running on Saturday (albeit only 2 in public service), that's almost a gala!

    Thank you very much Tom.

I'd love to come over this weekend. But being up to my waist in DB 44 class 2-10-os, 01 pacifics and those wonderful old P8 38 class 4-6-0s, it will take 80151 on just the 4 Maunsells to see me get across to the Glockenblume-Dampfeisenbahn at present.
I hope you are still enjoying NZ, and all is going well for you and yours down there.

My like is for 31065 and, to follow on from what @Jamessquared has said, the valuable and essential missionary work it is doing. And not for the wr locos.

Not a good weekend for heritage railways given the Severn Valley's derailment at Kidderminster too.

What we should remember is these things do happen, and in terms of incident numbers heritage railways do well to keep them down.

There are always positives in the negatives, and certainly in the cases of both Bluebell and SVR those positives will be some good learning points which can take operations forward for the better.

Indeed so, but it was also reassuring that the incident must have been recorded and reported according to the railway's procedures. As has been said by @2857Harry it's the 'near misses' that often provide the important learning for the future.

Not much chance of hiding something that happened in a station in the middle of a gala though!

Unfortunately, heritage railways in general have a much higher incidence rate than on the big railway when you consider the mileages and number of operational movements.

I’m not entirely sure that’s correct. I work on both.

The incident rate (Ie number of incidents) on the big railway is much higher because naturally more workings, more trains, etc. I mean there’s been 14 SPADs on the big railway in total for the past 7 day period, I doubt on heritage it’s near that.

Incident per mile I’d agree, but then it’s bound to be higher on heritage compared to mainline because of the ammount of miles.

But that’s a given, the incident per mile/per movement/per hour rate will always be higher because there’s less of the per on heritage.

Certainly the ORR's view is that heritage railways have disproportionately more accidents. I'm sure I have seen and heard them state this in various media.

Correct. Their view is that Rate per operational movement heritage railways have more accidents. But that is somewhat a given considering how many operational movements occur. 10/100 on heritage is going to be a greater percentage than 10/10000 on mainline.

I still think considering a high percentage of heritage volunteers are not mainline men, that the sector does well to keep incidents down.
