    Personally, I think quite a few of those purists [conveniently] forget that Awdry probably had an influence in their very young youth !

    The only thing that the good Reverend (or his illustrator) got wrong was, as one of our cleaners pointed out, the white running plate on Thomas.

    Indeed. Arguably the railway and the preservation movement as a whole may have struggled to get off the ground without Awdry.

    I didn't realise until I visited the excellent narrow gauge museum, that Tom Rolt recognised the value of Awdry as being more useful than the average volunteer and asked him to promote the Talyllyn in his stories. What a master stroke that was!
