Since there's no suggestion of foul play, I'm not suggesting that they should turn down such an opportunity, simply that it would be comparatively hard to disguise the source even if the vendor wished to keep in the background. Obviously, the more distinctive the part, the harder it would be.

But, of course, all GWR 4-6-0 parts look the same, and are normally stamped with a generous selection of numbers! [grin]

The lack of evidence isn't proof of evidence.

Just to bump this, the FRT accounts suggest that if they did buy a complete set of valve gear they got one hell of a bargain.

I took a nose around 4979 last year and the valve gear (newly painted) and plenty of non-ferrous fittings seemed in evidence. No sign of connecting or coupling rods although these may just have been elsewhere.

The rod in the foreground doesn't belong to any Hall!

Doh!! Suitably embarrassed :) To be honest I can't recall what other locos were in the vicinity of 4979 other than a GW 56xx 0-6-2T. My visit was September last year and Dumbleton had already left so no help on any parts shared anyway.
