The groundwork is all but done - I expect they'll be waiting until after the Gala next weekend before pushing ahead with erecting the shelter.

This good, but.....it's not clear if it cover the contents as well as the structure. Could be a problem with the signal-box if it did, as that might affect our ability to do future upgrades etc.
Time to get the same for Chelfham now!

The listing regulations seem to be more pragmatic nowadays than they were in the past. The 'fixtures and fittings' are included, but if changes are needed for operational reasons, I doubt that would be an issue. The listing may mean that expert contractors will be required more often to carry out maintenance (such as those needed for the station building roof) rather than using unaccredited or volunteer labour. I just hope we don't need to bring in a horse to live in the stable! :)

My brother's house is grade 2 listed. What it means, in practical terms, is that when you want to do work on the property you need to talk to the council's conservation officer and agree what can and can't be done, down to methods and materials used. In my brother's case that's included some quite stringent restrictions on floor slabs (which he's had to carefully pull up and then re-lay to solve damp and structural issues), however as far as I know it doesn't extend to restrictions on how he can re-do the roof (on the basis that the present roof is known to be not original anyway and they don't know what the original looked like). So it's restricted, but in a kind of pragmatic way. Probably a good thing for an organisation that cares about heritage, I think.

Well....the listing says "Unless the List entry states otherwise, it includes both the structure itself and any object or structure fixed to it (whether inside or outside) as well as any object or structure within the curtilage of the building......" but then goes on to say also "...For these purposes, to be included within the curtilage of the building, the object or structure must have formed part of the land since before 1st July 1948..."

So, given that the lever-frame does not comply with the later criterion, then it would appear that we can presume the lever-frame is excluded. I would have expected/preferred to have such a specific statement to the fact that the contents were excluded.

Perhaps I imagined it, but I thought I read that the lever frame is excluded...

    Noted, thanks.

There seem to be a myriad of parts to this listing, not all of which I've come across yet !

I feel that as a railway, we may be moving in a direction that may not have been considered Yes, I agree we need to be more proactive when it comes to our heritage. I would suggest that we need to think about producing our own set of guidelines, like those on the Bluebell Railway

    1 https://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/soc/notices/ltp_oct2021.pdf

    2 https://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/soc/ps_manual/

I am not suggesting we take them on board without carrying out our own review first of all, but it would show our stakeholders that we can be trusted to do the right thing when it comes to managing our heritage to the highest of standards, even if it means using volunteer labour to do it.

There are many things around a railway that can be done with Volunteers. Should we only rely on professional help, then some things may never get done, Such as building an extension
