Might he be interested in it (45491) as a source of spares, if nothing more than that? - boiler, frames & axleboxes, wheels, cylinders, and a host of smaller bits. At worst, more constructive than scrapping it! Personally, though, I don't think it will come to that - I think there's going to be plenty of people looking at buying it.

Not sure Ive seen anyone wanting to scrap 45163 - the boys at Colne Valley might have something to say about that if being used for spares too.

I think you are possibly being a little deliberately obtuse here! The original posts were about the possible fate of 45491 and that loco was what I was referring to. 45163 was not part of that discussion, merely mentioned as byline. However, to avoid further pedantics I have amended my previous post to provide clarity.....

If 45491 was to become available, I would imagine Ian would be interested in it at the right price, as it would allow him some overhaul time for the other fives.
Ian has the boiler from 44901, so I'm not sure if he would want/need another spare.

Does he have any other spares from 44901, wheel sets, frames etc, that might speed up any overhauls, of his other Black 5's, if say an engine develops frame cracks, and he has an already overhauled spare set of frames?

It's not that easy. There are many variations of Black Five frames from thickness to wheelbase to plain and roller bearings. They don't all interchange.

Apologies @60044 Not deliberation on my part although I may well be accused of being obtuse. I just missed the point/post where the conversation moved from the four Black Fives under Ian Riley's umbrella, including 45163. I do agree that 45491 could add to his collection of locos or parts thereof as necessary though.

The chassis of 44901 is at the Vale of Berkeley railway.
I seem to recall that the cylinders from 48518 were rescued but I can’t recall who got them. I assume 48518’s drivers are also stored somewhere as strategic spares.

You can't have too many spares, I'd suggest, if they are in good condition!

I thought one of the cylinders had ended up on a black 5- could be wrong.

It’s in my memory that at least one of 48518’s spares is on 45407? RHS?

Then he's only got one spare for 4 locos! Another set would not come amiss!

Could well be. I can remember reading that they'd been saved but not where they went to!

After overhaul is it staying with Riley's or going back off lease to the KWVR?
