Likewise in my time on the spanners, but as I found out working in Bridgnorth shed, there are many differences in accepted practice and terminology between the automotive and railway industries.

Indeed, but the interesting bit is that (AFAIK), they are all the same. That to me is the interesting bit, nobody's put pipes in a different order over/under each other etc.

T’other way round. A fitter would make things fit. He needed files, scrapers, measuring equipment, etc. A mechanic just bolted things together. He just needs spanner’s and a screwdriver. They both needed hammers, of course. :)

As I said, different terminology between the two disciplines. I was once asked - by a motor mechanic - what the torque settings were on a steam engine. I told him it was four pounds measured from the shaft of the hammer!

Until a few years ago, all the EMUs at work were exclusively ex-BR. All heavy maintenence work was done using hand ratchets and air-powered nut guns. A handful of jobs had torque settings listed for the bolts, but generally, it was doing everything up as tight as possible without shearing the bolts. Nowadays virtually everything has a torque setting, though how when you have tiny screws that are meant to be torqued to 1.5Nm, you have to wonder, what is the point?
