Thought the inscription on Eric's smokebox yesterday was a bit doom-laden:( - we're not there quite yet I hope:) IMG_8129a copy.jpg

A mainline registered black 5 could be the most valuable bit of family silver to flog to keep the fat cats in cream for the winter.

The rubbed out words visible earlier in the day said “Bradford to Leeds” and was a take on the the following picture taken some 58 years ago and found on Flickr by one of the MPD staff. Apologies to the original copyright holder but thought worth showing to put the above picture in context.

Neither a member or volunteer and apparently lacking the sense to realise that when posting such a misogynistic libel on the railway it’s wise to avoid the watchful eye of CCTV.

Out of curiosity, why are the lamp irons in such a strange disposition? (I mean, it hasn't got 6 like all self-respecting locos should have, but even the four it has got are in weird places...)

The top one was moved down at the end of steam so it was further away from the overhead wires. Because it had to be offset, the middle one was moved across as well. Not an issue darn sarf where you lot have that stabiliser rail to stop your trains falling over.

Interesting point. So what is the revenue maximising multiple from a day ticket to an annual? I'm thinking four might be the magic number.

I often wondered what that extra rail was for. I also often wondered why they carried spare lamp brackets, as well? Seems a total waste to me. :)

Equally confused as to why the GWR needed to illuminate the lineside - all their lamps must have pointed in that direction...

How else do you display a proper head code if you don't have at least six lamp irons?

Why have six lamp brackets when you don’t have six lamps to put on them?

The driver knows where the train is going, the guard knows where the train is going*, the signalman knows where the train is going. The passenger knows where he is going. Who else needs to know?

    * Actually, a good few years ago I was getting on a train starting its journey in Leeds and the driver and guard were sat inside having a conversation. It was a first generation DMU. As I got on, even though I was 99.9% positive I was boarding the right train, I asked if this was the train for Castleford. Simultaneously the driver said yes and the guard said no. A very brief discussion ensued and the guard went off to check. He came back and picked up his bag and went. Our driver then went off to find out what had happened to his guard. He came back a short while later and went through the train saying it would be delayed whilst we waited for a guard to be found. I often wondered what would have happened if I'd not asked the question.

It would make a good handle for climbing onto the running plate if they'd remembered to put some steps there.

No matter what people think about the direction the NYMR is going in and where the problems lie, it's wrong to do such things.
