I was on the trip up the Lickey from Gloucester to, unusually, Waterloo. 65 at the bottom and 35 at the top with a Class 66 helping out. Some thought the Duke could have done it on its own but I think not. Quite a troubled journey southbound via Sharnbrook and Dudding Hill - trespassers etc. - but a nice trip.

More interesting was the Salopian in 2011. Straight out of Euston with 13 on and up to 35 by the top of the bank. Coming home we ran from Milton Keynes to Watford in under 33 minutes for the 32+ miles and then shot down to Euston in 22 minutes. I recall that Harrow to Wembley was a tad quick....

    And again on Wednesday.
Once it got going a problem free trip. In coach 8 out of 9, couldnt hear the 57 ?( but hard to distinguish from Genny Car) doing anything
During the faster running could not hear the Duke at all ( but with such an open exhaust and short cut -offs she isnt the noisiest) but during climbs the helicopter impersonations were easily heard 8 coaches back.

I was 3 coaches back and hearing the sound of the Duke again took me back to April 2008 when it did York to Edinburgh and then Glasgow to York on the Railway Touring Company's North Briton railtour.

Well done to all those involved in this recent restoration, the engine is a credit to all your hard work. Thanks also to those involved in making yesterday's trip happen and making it an enjoyable outing despite the earlier delays. A nice surprise was having an at seat tea and coffee service which was unexpected. Well done Saphos staff.

Yes I got home much later than expected but can't deny that it was worth it. Be nice if we could do it again :)

Did 71000 fail at Carnforth today? RTT shows the return as “cancelled due to a problem with a steam locomotive”.

    From facebook
    "She’s ready to come home!
A huge thank you to the engineers and crews at Locomotive services group and our trust volunteers for the quick repair job on 71000, they were up until late hours last night and back at it this morning to repair the valve.
Also a massive thank you to West Coast Railways for allowing us to use their workshop and turn the locomotive on their turntable. A fantastic team effort by all involved!
71000 will be returning at Crewe once we have an allocated path to do so under her own steam"

Can I like that twice?! Good to hear of co-operation with West Coast too, a few (me included) doubted whether that could happen!

I completely agree with you. I think it's amazing to see LSL and WCR coming together in a time like this.

A Freightliner class 70 which suffered a seized wheelset/ motor close to Carnforth a couple of years ago, was lifted in 10A for FL to carry out wheelset swap.

Top marks to Mr Smith and his WCRC.............and a mention for the lads who put the long hours in to get it up and running again.

Good to see two rivals, putting differences aside, to give mutual help I wonder if in a future GB tour, we might see, further co-operation, with an LSL worked leg ?

I think that the 71000 crew who put in the long hours to effect the repair need a little bit more than just a mention. A big round of applause at the very least

My guess is that Mr Smith had nothing to do with it and whatever collaboration that took place was well under way before he found out...
