Polish engines dont burn coal.. they just shred it and throw it out of the chimney.

I don't want to sound nationalistic, but can't anyone find any good old-fashioned British clag to compete with this?

Surely someone can come up with something even better - an industrial maybe ... 8-[

Going off topic (!!!!), this reminds me of Snowdon Mountain Railway shed at 7am (before they had diesels), with thick yellow smoke sticking to everything including my lungs. Now that''s what I call atmosphere!

Am I right in thinking that most of the American and Polish engines are steam powered stokers. Having worked on a French 141R i can say that the coal that they use is like dust and does go straight up the chimney when they are being fired.

On steam test at Schaffhousen http://chris.photoblog.org.uk/p54550781.html

Are we jsut looking at the end result that is black cloud or do we look at seperate Uk hand fired clag and American/continental machine stoker fired?

Awesome shot of the S160 by the way, with a demonstration like that i cant understand the lack of enthusiasm for 2253.

Generally speaking American steam super power doesn't do light haze at the chimney. They're worked pretty hard and with the type of fuel they use with mechanical stokers lots of clag is often the result. Anyway what's wrong with a bit of grandstanding?
