.....to say nothing of 44932 45212 45231 and 45407. I could go on (if I think hard enough). I've purposely omitted 45305 as that was initially sold for scrap before it was saved by the scrap merchant.

Good spot - a flag missing for that one in my DB - rookie error now fixed :)

Interestingly, the SR loco's we have that were not sourced from Woodhams also gives 39 locomotives. In terms of Bluebell, S15s 847 and 830 came from Woodhams, the latter now dismantled and at Grosmont of course.

The winner of the big four is London Midland that have 48 locos existing from examples not taken from Woodhams

Is that a result of the NW being the last hold out of steam?

It likely is I would say, yes.

It is always said how well the GW has done in terms of preservation but without Woodhams happening to be where it was geographically, things would naturally have been much different. I think the SR also benefited from having a greater range of 'older types' that lasted well into the 1960s enabling early preservation groups such as Bluebell to benefit early-doors.

Unfortunately for LNER enthusiasts, only one locomotive from departmental stock made it to Barry. (61264)

Also 43106 which moved from BR (Lostock Hall) to the SVR under its own power (as had 46443 earlier). Strangely 48773 moved from Rose Grove to the SVR one week after 43106, but was refused permission by BR to do the same.

A quick count of the current SVR fleet:

    Ex-Barry in the order they left: 4566, 80079, 4930, 5164, 7819, 75069, 42968, 7812, 4150, 2857, 7325, 7802, 34027 (13)
    Ex-BR/LT: 1450, 5764 (L95), 43106, 46443, 47383, 48773 (6)
    Ex-NCB: 813, 7714, 1501 (3)
    Ex-Army: Gordon (1)
Other: Warwickshire, Lady A, Welsh Guardsman (3)
New build WIP: 82045, Catch Me Who Can (2)

My memory is it was quite a surprise when the Dart Valley acquired a Manor to go with their fleet of tank engines.

Perhaps one of the less observed things is how few pre grouping GWR locomotives survived. Apart from the 2-8-0s and 2-8-0Ts, which were very long lived, most were gone by the preservation era.

I make it 17 Pre Group GWR locomotives, and 6 pre WW1 (plus 9017 which gets an honorary mention in those categories) .

Although 47383 came from Williamthorpe colliery being pedantic I’m fairly certain it was never a NCB owned loco and was bought from BR. BR had an agreement to supply the colliery with locos.

Yes it was bought direct from BR. From a contemporary SVR News article, after withdrawal at Westhouses in September 1967 , it was stored in the shed there and tended by the assistant foreman. Because there was no suitable road access at Westhouses, it was hauled by a BR shunter to Blackwell A Winning Colliery in May 1968 and collected from there by Caudles.

41241 went straight to the Worth Valley from BR I think? Possibly 51218 and N2 also?

That's not entirely true. 8F 48518 was built at Doncaster for the LNER (Class O6) and survived at Barry until it was dismantled in about 2010 to provide a firebox for yet another recreation of a GW 4-6-0.
    Ah well....

You are correct about 41241, which was a Skipton loco at the end. I had a friend who had bought the number plate off it when the shed closed. He went down to collect it from the shed stores and was greeted by a rather embarassed storeman. He explained that while they had sold him the numberplate someone had since come along and bought the rest of the loco and would quite like the number plate to go with it. In the end my friend agreed to have the plate off another Skipton Ivatt, 41251, instead.

Fair cop Peter - I'll accept 8518 as LNER built although it was numbered in LMS range and when withdrawn in 1965, was allocated to 1A Willesden. I'm not sure if it was ever allocated to an LNER shed?
