Accountants might raise questions about the matching principle, and whether income should be recognised where related expenditure would not be incurred in the same period.

I did say I'm not an expert in such matters, but I was chatting recently to a NYMR former Financial Director, and he pointed out that in one recent year the annual deficit would have been rather worse if a recent grant award had not been included in the stated income, and it presumably hadn't all been spent by then. I think his opinion is worth rather more than mine!

Indeed, a specialist opinion is always worthwhile. But that somewhat makes my point, as my understanding of the principle is that such flattery of one year's results is not particularly good practice.

Obviously it is too early to tell how popular this year's Santas will compare with the Polar Express operation as regards numbers carried.
However, without concession fees being paid on every Polar Express ticket then, perhaps, the railway-organised Santas might actually be more profitable even if fewer passengers are carried.
    Time will tell I suppose.

The price has dropped from about £40 last year to £24, which is better for families.
The booking details says pajamas can still be worn, even though looks like it it will not contains elements of the book and film
The Polar Express will still run in 6 UK locations for those willing to travel and pay for the experience.
Hope it goes well for the Swanage railway this year and the Santa Express will still contribute towards a much needed profit / surplus, as well as providing some fun for families..

Whilst it was great fun being part of the 'magic' of Polar Express, the logistics, planning and the negative fallout on social media about SR ripping off people because of the price, this is a positive step forward. We are back in control of a proven product.

I see the road works are still in place at Harmans Cross, are they causing much delay?

No never seems to bad, although the last time I went through it was a longer single lane temp light section than normal. Inbound you could always take the back road from Corfe under the viaduct, but turning right out of there is not always great going back out.

Harmans Cross roadworks have been no real issue at all.

There are also roadworks starting in Sandford on Wednesday for a number of weeks in connection with construction of the new supermarket; I suspect these will cause more issues for those wanting to travel to Purbeck from places east than anything actually on Purbeck.

Saturday is the start of the Ghost Trains for Halloween, they will be running from 25/10->02/11.
Current locos rostered are T3 563 on the Ghost Train and 34070 Manston on the service train; usual caveats apply.
    Hope that helps.

Looking at the photos from the Halloween train and I’m impressed at the T3 it does look the part! Hopefully it is a really good money maker!
Looking at the cam today and the seating plan it’s booked for a 4 coach train and today it will be interesting to see how much ‘walk up’ demand there is.

I’ll be heading down this week and hopefully soak at the atmosphere
