We're booked on the 11:40 on Wednesday. As we are are staying with a friend only 5 mins walk from Levisham station, our plan is to catch the 09:30 from Levisham which gives us an hour and a bit to kill at Grosmont before our departure, which isn't too bad, but entertaining our autistic son for 3.5 hours between our arrival back (14:15) and the next public train back to Levisham (17:50) is going to be challenging! Plus that train is both a Whitby return, and providing return travel for two FS trips - so I'm guessing it could be a very busy train...we'll see how it goes.

They don't seem to be making easy for people to get around the railway.
Also, putting a blue class 47 on the back of their flagship steam service does not give the best look. If one train should be diesel free, it should be the Scotsman.

I'm guessing the 9F failed as it was on the first trip out this morning, but then seemingly got stuck at Goathland until the return trip came back through rather than running back on its own. Though you could rightly argue there should have been another engine in steam as a backup...

With regards the timetable, I just don't understand the thinking behind it. They should of at least had another internal service to enable parking at the other stations and connections with the FS departures. Or they could of run the West Somerset model and had FS departures from either end with another engine doing the return trip. You could charge 'slightly' less but end up with an extra FS pulled trainload. That way the parking is spread over both ends.

What are they going to do for parking next week when there isn't any internal public service at all. There's enough challenges as we all keep hearing about, without own goals like this.

You could consider catching the train into Whitby at 16.40 and then back from there to Levisham, reducing your time hanging around Grosmont and hopefully guaranteeing seats for your trip back.

I do feel extrememly sorry for anyone driving to Grosmont and finding it mayhem to park - must be extrememly stressful, especially if you have some excited kids in tow who are looking forward to a day out.

Every track relay, every bridge replacement or repair, every loco overhaul, every carriage overhaul, every loco steamed or started, every train operated is an investment.
Obtaining the best return on that in investment should be the top priority.
    This is not public transport.
    This is not playing trains.
    This is entertainment!
If customers go away less than 100% happy then that is a failure.
Events larger than the FS debacle were successfully organised in the past with a much smaller SMT than there is today. So either the structure is wrong or the people aren't the right fit.
Having a smaller but better rewarded staff would attract more highly motivated people, whom I'm sure would be more aware that their continued employment along with the existence of the NYMR depended on how well they perform at their jobs.

    Sawdust.

    Not for those
Not for those who have gift aided their ticket purchase. Gift aid rules say it is a donation freely given and is not refundable in any circumstances. If they do it could put the whole NYMR gift aid scheme in jeopardy. We’ve been here before.

In times past the railway would have quite happily hung 8 coaches on the back without assistance. It’s possibly a worry that it will struggle due to railhead conditions at this time of year. However, the loco is being entrusted with this load going north yet, afaik, Scotsman doesn’t have rear sands. It may also be that the NRM have stipulated this in the agreement but I can’t see why.

Steve, the NRM makes no such stipulations about the operation of Flying Scotsman. It is down to Northern Steam to operate it in whatever manner they see fit and any restrictions put on the loco's operation is purely down to them. Indeed there is no one at the NRM with the knowledge or experience these days to lay down any such restrictions.

It's had a banker in the past at the KWVR and I think the WSR?

I had presumed it was some sort of operational restrictions to prevent it having to be worked too hard?

It worked 8 coaches with no problem and no banker on the Bluebell (but that is 1 in 55, not 1 in 40-odd). Forwards, in terms of sanding.

Leaving Keighley is on a tight curve and uphill, so understandable. I had a run behind S160 5197 a few years ago before it was fitted with sanders and it took the best part of 15 minutes to get to Ingrow. It flew the rest of the way, but that first section is awkward, especially when damp.

Hey mate, I’ve got my tea on the go atm, and I’ve no inclination to double check but I have a feeling that 78022 was tail end Charlie at the KWVR when it visited there due to the length of train?
    8 coaches maybe?
    Slightly longer than usual?

Last train from Whitby left 23' late and Grosmont 30' late, and it looks like FS will be c.75 late arriving back at Grosmont.

    81 late at Grosmont.
