And we have to wonder why.

I was on the return run of the S.R.P.S. Railtours / Days Out Royal Scot on 30th November and 1st December 1996 when bags of coal were loaded from the platform at Newcastle.

Edit: I have some poor quality video of that trip. Would that be of interest and if so which section would be the best place for a link? It's hardly What's Going On (now). Photography? General Railway Chat?

Happened with Clun Castle on the Shap Mountaineer at Crewe on the return. Bags loaded from the GUV. But we digress.

Also happened with 5043 on the Castle Over Shap at Crewe on the return, IIRC she also went into to Steamtown (rather than just staying in the loop) to be watered on the outbound so may have had some coal added then as well.

Thank you for your kind words, Sadly I fear just a one off "local" event as I can't see me getting as far as the S&C or the fells any more.
Best wishes to all. Take care - Chris
