Peter, there was a documentary on BBC iPlayer about Mr Satow and his involvement in the construction of several of the replicas that were involved in 1975?
Maybe something we could Email the BBC about?

The public service set is 7 coaches today, so perhaps someone has listened and reacted.

No response at all to the complaint sent to customer services earlier this week about the over crowding / standing only though I'm told.

Whitby Goth Weekend so maybe they'd twigged it might be even busier this weekend. Or perhaps not.

Can anyone Clarify something for me?

I’ve seen a few videos of Scotsman being banked up the line towards Pickering by 92134. Now, I know at Keighley 60103 was banked by the most powerful engine they had available, (the WD 2-8-0 the first time), which I think is to avoid it being put under too much strain and because of runaround arrangements at Oxenhope.

However, I’ve also seen videos of Scotsman returning to Grosmont tender-first with no 9F. What I can’t work out is whether these are the same day(s)

So… what’s the operational arrangements? Is the 9F banking the train part way then stepping aside and returning to Grosmont LE for the next run?

That isn't a surprise, a visit by the Rocket replica some years ago was also very popular.

Assisting to Goathland then returning to Grosmont light engine. If railhead conditions are considered to be very bad the loco stays on to Levisham before coming off then hooks on the back of the returning train to give it a shove up to summit.

The gradient is just as bad Northbound as it is Southbound 1 in 49 at the steepest.
Curves may also play a part.

9F worked through on 8.45 to Levisham this morning due to rail conditions twixt Grosmont and Goathland, otherwise as said earlier it would LE back to Grosmont.

Ps It can be equally bad on the return journey through Newtondale so good call.

PPS just heard 9F worked through to Pickering, and returning with 9F now on front and FS on back!

Oh dear, hope FS hasn't had a failure of some sort?

There may be a sound operational reason as to why the 9F is leading and not FS. To shuffle locos around takes time and if the timetable is tight for even a simple run round then trying to swap 2 big engines would create a delay, which has the knock on effect across the whole railway.

Certainly saved time coming back with the 9F leading, 1140 left 40 late.

The hard part about running any heritage railway is coordination of the different elements, and most especially the design of the “customer offer” with the operational constraints of the railway, from locomotives and carriage availability to the shape and layout and passenger flows through the stations and of course car parking. It’s pretty difficult to pull it altogether and requires a great team spirit to do it well.

They've been very fortunate indeed with the weather. It could have easily been pouring down and blowing a gale.

Out of interest, how is the other 4-6-2 currently running at NYMR doing? Particularly in terms of adhesion, or lack of it.

Running perfectly on the Moorlander, late (1 hr) back into Grosmont today through no fault of itself…

0845 away at 0917, and no sign of the 0919 into Whitby yet. (although not now showing on the roster, although still on the timetable information).

I was watching them setup the FS thinking they were running late. It wasn't even on the train until shortly after the scheduled dept time. I also wondered where the coaches are/were for the shuttle. Only looking via webcam but can't see any in the sidings from that. It's also still on the roster I can see, though that might be 'stored' cookies loading it. Not a good start to the week.
