I think it had a rare steam even time booking on the return; Carlisle-Lancaster, if I've read it right from RTT. But looks like there were some delays and it was not met. No doubt those on board timing will tell the story at some stage.

Brightening the overcast conditions and sporting the 'Royal Scot' headboard, BR Class 8 4-6-2 No. 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' speeds through Greenholme on the climb to Shap summit and onwards to Carlisle. I would like to pass on my grateful
thanks to Bob Meanley and his staff at Tyseley for bringing this beautiful machine back to the mainline and all other organisations who helped to put the finishing touches to this task. Well done to you all

The climb out of Lancaster on the 1in94 from a standing start was truly something to behold, music to the ears!

Just stepped off the Royal Scot for an alternative run back to Euston that saves over an hour on the charter arrival. No, I'm not anti diesel but I value a time that gets me across London and home. And I enjoyed the morning run to Crewe with a bit of 90 mph running en route.

Today with the Duke was fantastic, especially the run to Carlisle. Inside even time to pass Preston. Key summit speeds were 67 over Yealand after a cheeky "hello 10A" toot as we swept by at 77. Grayrigg at 47 and Shap at 46 after passing Tebay at 77. The load of 10 was played with. Coming back the climb to Shap was more subdued but after the Lancaster stop we had a great non stop run to Crewe in under 80 min if you discount the false start out of the loop. The loco was brilliant. The crews were keen and the train was a delight to travel in.

I know that LSL sets a high standard and to some extent you pay for it. But today was for enthusiasts and also for many of the LSL staff. The LSL stock rides really well and the whole of the interior looks as smart as when the rake first went on the main line. And here's a novel thing. Everything worked and the windows were spotlessly clean, inside and out. Such a simple thing but what a difference it made.

Well done LSL. Please do it again with Blue Peter.

He was asked if he was taking charge for the short trip to Upperby, comment from one of the crew, no he's taking it back to Crewe. :)

The Duke lets off steam after an excellent run to Carlisle. A member of BTP seems unperturbed.

Her job was, with others, to shepherd all photographers on that platform back under the main station roof as the station manager had 'safety concerns'. So the end of the platform was closed.

I guess if your job may be on the line should someone have a mishap off the narrow bit then maybe it was all justified. Not certain why so many station staff seem to be shouty over such things.
