At least that confirms it's happened! Not good news. Both fusbile plugs gone. I'm not saying any more because my info was at least fourth hand when I got it.

Wouldnt an engine dropping both plugs when in active service be considered a serious event ?

One plug could be considered mechanical, but both suggests either a faulty gauge for the water level, or a crew taking the eye off the ball or mis-reading / taking unnessessary risks over the seriousness of their situation.

I assume their inspecting the boiler / firebox for damage and not just making up a new set of plugs and putting it back into service ?

There's an eerie silence around this compared to the 10 pages for 73096 ,and 2 pages over 60163's faulty plug.

Yes. Can't comment on what and why, though, as I don't know. Hoped someone else might.
Isn't Andy on this Forum? Very sad for him.

Yes 3855 I think, very frustrating for him, his wedding picture with 1300 is in the latest SR issue that just came out too !
Let's hope everything is done above board and the engine is not too serious.

Any further news about any possible firebox damage to this loco?

''Without speculating, which would be wrong.............the crown is quilted, some crown stays are passing water (girder stay bolts), the 'top' laps are leaking (all under static water)..both Fusible Plugs have 'dropped'.....the previously heavily scaled crown is now perfectly clean and 'pink' for the rearmost half.''

SR have reported that the plugs dropped because both injectors failed whilst she was hauling an 8 coach train by herself during the war weekend.

AFAIK though she was double-heading with the Jinty that weekend, or she was when I was there at least.

    Any clarification ?

BOTH injectors failed and nobody noticed? Doesn't this indicate a serious problem concerning the competence of footplate crew? I must say that the ELR have done a good job of keeping this secret!

There's a lot more to this sorry saga than has been written here but I've heard too many variations on a theme to say anything. It must await publication of an official report or someone willing to stick their neck on the block and tell the whole truth.

This month's steam railway carries a good article.

It suggests this was one of the most dangerous events to have occured on a preserved railway todate.
    summarizing the article..

The engine had injector problems and was taken out of service, but was later restored to service and allowed to operate a service train. The owner was on the footplate, the engine later ran out of water and the plugs melted. Major damage has been caused to the firebox.
The pilot loco (47324) was not on this train unlike others operated with 1300 that day. (is this relevent ?)

I would imagine the obvious questions the insurance companies will ask if they pay anything or change premiums would be :

    1. Who passed it to run after earlier failing it ?
    2. Who was monitoring the locomotives operational condition during the journey including injectors and water levels ?
    3. What other factors influenced this event ? (could there be at least one significant event not reported in the SR article).

I would have also though the plugs would have dropped before any damage(certainley to this extent) was made.

The rapid loss of pressure will most likely have damaged the box.

Strong words. Have you confirmed knowledge of this fact? If not, I would suggest that such allegations are not made on a public forum. If you do, then heaven help us all.

do you think it possible a loco would be able to take 8 for over 15 miles or so with 2 plugs dropped?

Why does a plug dropping prevent any damage?

Some very peculiar ramblings on here!

Suggest we wait for the official enquiry report, or at least some verifiable inside info from someone who actually understands the physics involved.
