To correct/clarify my earlier post, I've received the following info:

Apologies to Steve for getting his name wrong.

With JC and cameraman the footplate was crowded, or was a lot of it done with remote cameras??? There were times when he turned to a camera that must have been mounted on the tender above the coal door.
It has just been suggested to me by a friend in the TV business that probably the reason JC and the crew got dirty, was because of all the electrical gear on the footplate, they were not allowed to wash down and water the coal as is normal.

I don't think it would be good policy to water the coal whilst running under the wires!!I've got that dirty just pulling coal forward when the coal has been damped occasionally and not under the wires.

So, what happens when it rains on the coal under the wires?

Good one std tank. Put these experts, ( and I try to be one much too often), in their place for once!

    Surely you must be joking.

There's an obvious difference between raindrops falling from the sky and a hosepipe held by a person. Anyone who doesn't understand that can't be particularly bright.

Not necessarily, but you'd have to be in North Wales to truly grasp this (where we have no overhead wires). And please don't call him Shirley... ;-)

Common sense and rules dictate that a hosepipe should not be used under the wires, but how many main line locos have bunker spray pipes fitted in their tenders? As the spray pipes are downward facing they can be used under the wires.

That's not the driver. In London, you get your car windscreen cleaned whenever you stop at traffic lights - whether you want it done or not. Looks like their "business" has expanded to Spanish metro trains.

I am fairly certain that a stream of water from a hose is made up of many very small discrete droplets, each surrounded by air. The small current carried would be dependent on the charge accumulated on each separate droplet and the velocity of flow. I think it's probably safe but I am not sufficiently convinced that I am going to direct a stream onto a 25KV conductor.

    Cheers
    Alan
