TE[QUO="huochemi, post: 2959378, member: 3066"]My fishmonger was this morning singing the praises of the Polar Express at Wensleydale which he had just taken his grandchildren to, driving up from Grimsby to Leeming Bar as a day trip. The railway apparently starts its PEs quite early. I think the train was around 4.00pm which helps with the atmosphere. I don't know whether the Wensleydale Railway running the PE precluded the NYMR going this route, as some territorial exclusivity does not sound unreasonable, or maybe the NYMR does well enough with its Santas (which according to the website start at the end of November). I was interested that the catchment area extended so far (within two hours driving).[/QUOTE]

I have known two hours each way as a rule of thumb generally accepted as the time limit for any useful quantity of people travelling to work,

While I can’t confirm the actual cash benefit to the WR (as I don’t know) Regarding parking a local bus company are paid to run a park and ride shuttle bus to Leeming bar which solves the parking issue when polar is on

A good initiative. Providing another service whilst the line is open.

I think £12 is, maybe, a little steep just to go up the bank from Grosmont and walk back. Perhaps a straight tenner would be more enticing?

It does seem odd. 64 miles for £25 or 4 miles for 12 quid. I guess it's to suppress demand so it's not overloaded on the steep bit and empty the rest of the way.

NYMR fares continue to be a bit of a finger in the air job. Not that I'm complaining about the low fare as I think it is nearer what people are prepared to pay. I wonder how many people will decide to do the Pickering - Grosmont trip in the railcar instead of going on to Whitby and paying an extra £25 for the privilege? I wonder if the low fare is because the Railcar trailer is unheated and the Railcar heating only works when it is not under power? No mention of having to come in fur coats on the website!

Does the Autocar really fit the heritage ethos ? Is there any evidence they ever ran on the line ? Is it just a cheap option ?

I can’t believe that a line like the NYMR feels that a two coach DMU alongside a single loco hauled rake to Whitby is sufficient to handle traffic at what can be quite a busy period. A full and standing unheated round trip might not be too popular with families.

As an aside, could you travel out on the rail car to Grosmont and return on the steam hauled train?

I genuinely wonder if the person that booked it knows that, or maybe hadn't remembered (I'm not sure they needed the heating when it was last there?). Or are they are about to have a dawning realisation! That said you'd hope it was part of the conversation about the hire, with maybe the 'Are you sure?' comment included. At least if its busy people can huddle up for warmth!

No, the Pickering - Whitby steam service is advertised as not stopping at any of the intermediate stations, including Grosmont. A true park and ride service for Whitby.

I don't like this argument. If you want to restrict things to routes they ran in past lives then in this case it might not have been saved. Its an NER Autocar running on a former NER branch line. That's a lot more authentic than many things that happen these days. Should we stop SNG, or FS, or any other pacific running on the line as well because its very unlikely it ever did before preservation?

S15, Schools, 9F, Lambton tank... with the exception of Black 5s and Std 4 tanks, pretty much the whole of the NYMR operational fleet.

Well given it's older than all of the NYMR's coaching stock (including the teaks with exception of ECJS 189) and the vast majority of the loco fleet (steam and diesel) then I think this question can easily be answered that it most certainly does fit a heritage ethos.

The NER railcar ran from Scarborough, Whitby, Filey etc
It's highly appropriate, moreso than the teaks. Although the teaks did run in summer from Kings Cross to Whitby.

The TT is virtually Chris Price's lean scenario to maximise revenue and reduce costs.
Could it be the pattern for 2026?

There is no doubt that the railcar and trailer are appropriate heritage vehicles, but one has to question the wisdom of their use as unheated stock in the depths of a N.Yorkshire winter. I think there will be some unhappy passengers getting off at the end of the journey! They will provide an answer to the question of whether non-lavatory , non-gangwayed stock would ever be of use on the NYMR, and the cold may make it a particularly stern test of the passenger's bladders! Actually, the only non-gangwayed passenger vehicles left, apart from the H & BR 4-wheeled example, all have internal corridors and lavatories, though the TTIs still have to work their way from carriage to carriage - there's always a way of working out how not to do things that the management don't like so that they can prove they were right!
