The usual Museum of Science and Industry August Transport weekend will this year be extended to a full 9 day event, culminating with "The Great Garratt Gathering" to celebrate the 100th birthday of pioneer Beyer Garratt "K1". The event will take place from 8th- 16th August with classic cars, vehicles and steam road vehicles present for the first weekend and begininning of the week.

The Garratt event will begin proper on Friday 15th, with an aim of having 100 Garratt locos of all scales and gauges on site. Our own 3'6" SAR loco on display will be joined by "K1" and "William Francis", kindly on loan from the Welsh Highland Railway and Bressingham Museum respectively. Replica Liverpool and Manchester 2.2.0 "Planet" will be sharing passenger train duties over the 9 days with ex Beyer Peacock works shunter 1827, from the Foxfield Railway. 71000 "Duke of Gloucester" will also be arriving via the mainline from the East Lancashire Railway for display over 14th-16th. Model railways, trade stands and Beyer Peacock/Garratt exhibits will be on show. The Museum Archive is open 10am-4.30pm Tuesdays to Saturday all year round, and this year is focusing on the Garratt centenary.

Updates of further exhibits/visiting rolling stock etc will be added to this topic as they are confirmed.

Visit MoSI and sample the extra attractions as well as our usual permanent galleries. Easily accessable by rail, bus and Metrolink. Dont miss this chance of seeing THREE full size Garratts back in the city of their birth!

For more information on taking part on the 14th-16th August please PM me and I will put you in touch with the event organiser Chris Barnett.

Yes, sorry should have given the address myself!

No car parking will be availble on site for the event Im afraid, but as the space is being used for exhibits, it compensates!

I can now confirm that BR 71000 "Duke of Gloucester" will be attending the Great Garratt Gathering at MoSI in August. Also, we are happy to welcome Beyer Peacock steam tram "John Bull" on static display, kindly on loan from Crich Tramway Museum.

The goal of having 100 Garratts on site is 75%+ on its way to completion so come along to what promises to be a momentous event at one of the most historic railway sites in Britain!

With so much already planned for August on the mainline. I'll have to try and find some free time to get to this. Not been to the MoSI for a while was actually thinking of making a visit in the next couple of weeks. But me thinks I shall wait till August.

Think the chance to see William Francis alone is worth the visit, MoSI is much closer than Bressingham and I've always wanted to take a look at the largest of all industrials!

not all unfortunately indeed you had to pay to get into MoSI not so long ago, but this is also an event which someone has to pay for, I find it quite good that this is a free event. I`ll be there most weekends manning the ELR stand, so really looking forward to it.

MoSI are pleased to confirm that "William Francis" will definately be attending the "GGG".

Also, MoSI have recently purchased x3 16T mineral wagons which are expected on site shortly. This means further line ups at the Thursday photo shoot will be possible, namely "William Francis" and our own Battery Electric loco posed with the 3 wagons of the type which they regularly shunted for a living! (Contact MoSI direct or PM me for details of the Photoshoot. Tickets at £20.00 per person)

Train rides will be available all week with the following days motive power rostered:
    8th-9th, "Planet" only
    10th-11th Beyer Peacock No.1 "1827" only
    12th, "Planet" only
13th-16th (GGG event) BOTH locos will alternate on passenger trains.
    Fare £1.00 per person.

Dont miss the chance to travel behind replica 1830 "Planet" through the oldest surviving railway station in the world, or traveling behind "1827" back in Manchester for the first time since she left Gorton Foundry.
