Yes, it is mono sound. My right earpiece is fine but the left is quiet.
There is no rule which says you cannot be a member of both, they are not rivals at all!

    Terribly terribly sad.

I’ve known Geoff from our days at Peak Rail in the 70s & 80s. A lovely chap and an extremely able mechanical engineer. He would have been a great asset to any new build project and he was totally invaluable in resurrecting Hengist and turning it into the thoroughly professional build we have the pleasure of seeing today.

The fact that Geoff, like David Elliott with the P2, will be robbed of his finest hour, is so very unjust.

Hengist will live on, thanks to the quality of the team he has helped to build and led so courageously of late and we owe it to Geoff to give the project our full support and ensure it becomes his lasting legacy.

You are quite right! The two project teams work very well together and help each other as appropriate. This was shown right from the beginning when the Hengist gents helped the B17 team lay the track panels for their tenders, as attached photo. Hengist will likely be finished first of the two but IT IS NOT A RACE! Both locomotives will be carefully and methodically assembled to ensure there are no subsequent problems.

The Hengist lads have kindly asked the Toddington standard group if they’ll bring a stand to the open day which we have accepted. All being well we’ll have a few shiny bits of our own on display that you can see and touch. We’ve collaborated with Hengist on patterns in the past (as part of the br std loco owners group) and so, only too happy to add to the event.

It is with great sadness that the Standard Steam Locomotive Company have to announce the death of Geoff Turner, our Engineering Director. Geoff passed away on Saturday 28 March 2026. Geoff was a key member of the team that reorganised the company in 2011 and created the foundations for our organisation. Geoff was instrumental in forming the successful relationship between SSLC and CTL Seal/Diamond Group. Geoff will be sorely missed by his family and colleagues.

How sad that he has gone before the Open Day when he could have said goodbye to many of us in person. It would be good to acknowledge him on the day in some way. We need to ensure that all his work and effort has not been in vain and get this engine on the tracks sooner rather than later. RIP Geoff.
I appreciate the notice but definitely didn't want to see it so cannot like it.

Such tragic news. I was hoping to see Geoff for one last time at the Open Day in Sheffield on April 10th, but sadly it wasn’t to be. We go back a long way, to the early days of Peak Rail in the 80s in fact. A true gentleman and professional, the loco will be his fitting memorial, so the least we can do is to contribute to its completion ……
