Are there any Deltics registered to run on the main line? I would very much like to catch a tour with one at the helm. Also is there a site that lists heritage diesel tours like uksteaminfo?

Only Deltic currently mainline registered is 55022 "Royal Scots Grey". However this is currently only on one engine so isn't running any railtours at the moment. http://railtourinfo.co.uk/ is the diesel and electric equivalent of uksteam.

    I use this site but it appears to be down at the moment but may be being updated;

    http://www.railtourinfo.co.uk/index.html

Not so good for times as UK steam is for the steam charters, but they do have some times.I am a member of a few Yahoo Gen groups in the area we mostly do our video in, they are the best bet for advanced notice of times. They often post the full TRUST times with a lot more timing points. You get all the charters and specials in the area.Well worth joining your local one.

Thanks for the help, any chance of a Deltic going mainline in the near future?

Martin Walker (55022 RSG)is hoping the have the engine situation sorted out "shortly", then who knows?, fingers crossed. Yesterday he posted on his web site a very full and frank report on the progress of the repair. There are pictures of the damage caused when a piston crown tried to escape. :smt087
I can't remember the link but if you Google Royal Scots Grey you should find it.

MOD EDIT: The RSG website is http://www.royalscotsgrey.com/ - Richard

Aha , Mr Walkers diesel ...never relised that was ment for mainline , thought it was just gonna be preserved lines ...I buy quite a bit of scuba gear off him actully . Got a callender kicking round the house of a photshoot he done with it .

Heard a deltic for the first time at eastleigh , im not a major diesel fan ( mainly shuntting diesels and 37's ) but i have to say , there lovly sounding diesels.

RSG is mainline certified, even on one engine. That's how it got to this year's Swanage diesel gala, towing the other guests. It then went on to Eastleigh and finally went back home again...

A mighty fine beast - goodness knows what it would sound like with both engines running!

Having grown up within earshot of the ECML I can assure you that a Deltic on full song is a sound well worth hearing and one I'll never tire of. I'm not a great lover of diesels but a Deltic is one I always make an exception for.

It didn't sound quite right, last time I heard it, but that was a couple of years ago. They'd just fitted the ex-marine engine to it, and apparently there a small gap somewhere in the exhaust system, so it made a slightly whistling/whining sound. On full power it wasn't too bad, but with the engine at low revs or idling it sounded very strange.

A while back it did a day tour, Liverpool to Edinburgh and return, running on both engines. I saw, and heard it on the climb from Dewsbury up to Morley tunnel. It had the "bit between it's teeth" :smt103 Sounds like that live with you for a long time, you could hear it from a long way off. I wouldn't like to pay the diesel bill .
It should be on everybody's "must do" list, hear a Deltic working hard.

I read Deltic 9 has gone for it's summer jollies to the Nene Valley, worth a visit in the absence of mainline activity. Deltic 22 is action Saturday at the ELR's diesel gala, always worth a visit. Harold.

Oh yes Victor ! Those halcyon days before ECML HST sets brought many opportunities for that. Trouble is - I was young then, not an old codger like I am now!

My house is a mile across the fields from the ECML. Well remember on hot summer nights laying in bed with the windows wide open and listening to Deltics going for it on the overnight trains. You could hear them coming from miles away in the still night air until finally the sound faded away as they continued into the distance. Pure magic.

Does anyone out there know of Deltic movements on ECML today, 29th November 2010, up line passing Morpeth between 11-0 and 14-00?

A colleague in the office announced to me, 'Oh, there's one of those diesels again' to which I reacted, which diesels as it disappeared behind the trees.

Could they have been 37's I wonder?

There have been some DRS 37 movements on the ECML due to the snow so probably that
