Saw a Black 5 tender heading south on the M6 north of Preston today, could this be it?

 

More likely 45110 heading to GWSR for the gala. Allegedly.

Now that would be a fun performer on the Strathspey. Those large driving wheels would be very tempting to give a bit more welly on the long straight to Broomhill. But somehow a smaller wheeled STD 4 is a notably worse performer according to Those Who Must Not Be Questioned despite being built to slog.

 

There are quite a few experienced people who share that view. I don’t think the Schools is the NYMR’s to sell, though.

What state is the S15 825 in? Isn't that having some form of work done with the view of returning to traffic in the not too distant future?

 

Currently in the later stages of overhaul. It was predicted back in traffic later this year but the safer bet would be early next year I think. 2027 is the Centenary for that engine so its always been the target to have it back for that season.

 

Whilst on paper Repton is a strong loco is it a good match for NYMR's gradients and train lengths? It seems to have a heavy general overhaul every couple of years

 

When newly overhauled, 30926 seems to be well up to the demands of the NYMR, but it is currently nearing the end of its 10yr boiler overhaul, and general overhaul period so the faults are starting to add up. Once it has been through the works properly again and has been "reset" I would imagine it will be a reliable as any near 100yr-old machine will be. Note the emphasis on "properly" though; at the moment bits are being done on it, but I'm not sure that everything is being done simultaneously when it is in regular service, so I suspect that faults that are left over can cause follow-on problems elsewhere.

 

That's interesting. Not that I believe they would ever sell Repton I thought they did own that one.

To be fair, when it comes out they will no doubt be pushing for a relatively quick turnaround on it, assuming that is possible. Just looking at other Whitby engines that are either already out, or soon to be out for overhaul,

926 Repton - due out 2027
80135 'should' be back by then, but not proven on regular Whitby work (water capacity question mark)
825 'should' be back by then
75029 - under overhaul - given progress so far I wouldn't expect this before 2029/2030
45428 Eric Treacy - due out 2028
80136 - assuming 80135 proves available for Whitby then this might be a long term possibility but overhaul not yet started.

In the midst of this there's only 44806 with a longer term ticket (2033) and already in service, with lots of others overlapping leaving potential gaps where delays happen.

 

I would expect (in a sensible organisation, at least) for there o be plans for a water column at Grosmont to enable southbound trains to take water - if a column were to be provided I suggest that it would remove a lot of the worry about using 80135 through to Whitby and back to Pickering.

The Hastings line, for which the Schools were originally built, is not exactly flat!

 

I would hope somebodies been talking about it and getting quotes etc. But wouldn't a water column at that end platform 3/4 be a problem for visibility of the signal gantry? Not impossible to overcome but something else for them to think about.

I suspect its only being prepared for Whitby as a last resort to be used when other engines aren't available. If that's the case I think they will just use it for the Whitby/Grosmont section on those days if indeed its proven to be too tight on water to risk Goathland (I don't know if its ever been tested, just that its potentially tight on paper). I know t/t doesn't like those engine swaps but they are also rather common in recent memory.

 

80135 used to be used pretty regularly to Whitby, and working back to Pickering, and it didn't take water on the southbound side (towards Pickering - no column!) so I don't think it's impossible. @Steve will no more, I feel.
