Is there any reason that smaller sheets can not be MIG welded together to give the larger sizes? (I know it would be easier if you didn't have to in the first place)

Mig welding of sheet this thin together to produce a bigger sheet is virtually impossible to do without leaving an obvious join and distorting the sheet.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong by Impala but I think on this one he has got his work cut out.

I'm sure it doesn't. The original point being made by saltydog was basically a word of warning for those people suggesting new builds that material sizes and specifications that were once as common as your high street Woolworths are not necessarily available any more. Therefore alternatives have to be considered or you have to find someone who is willing and able to make special one offs for you. Its not impossible but it generally costs a lot more and takes a lot longer with often some slight comprimise.

Surely the answer would be a Giesl Ejector as fitted to City of Wells and, I think, Spitfire in BR service.

If we're honest, how much of the clag was due to the crews?

These locos were built to burn rubbish. Wartime - post war, the crews were often faced with tenders full of compressed coaldust. The dreaded ovoids.

As far as I'm aware, this has been sorted by the use of modern materials. Unless anyone knows different?

Are you suggesting that "some people" were economical with the truth when they had difficulties with sourcing materials for other high profile restorations?
If so, I would be very careful, as it is very well publicly documented, the problems encountered when trying to source said materials.

34064 was fitted with a Giesel in BR days. 34092 was fitted with a Giesel in preservation.

Was it the same piece of kit, removed when 64 was scrapped, or newly made for 92?

It was a new one. And they had to pay a licence fee for it as well. Which Dr Giesl used to pay for a visit to see the engine.

What happened to 64's? Was it scrapped with the loco or is it currently beautifully polished and sitting in someone's front room, next to the telly?

As far as is known, went for scrap.

The engine stood in Basingstoke yard for several weeks after it had bent its coupling rods in a slip at speed near Hook(?).

Did rebuilt 34090 have a Giesl Ejector fitted as well?

There was something about that loco that was diferent I am sure.

Cross referencing my mileage book with Winkworths book I am fairly sure I was on the 5.30 run on 20th Nov 1965 run. Circa 43 mins net time to Basinsgtoke with ten on. 23.31 secs to pass Woking. I have a very clear memory of being in the front coach behind that loco passing Oatlands Box, (between Walton and Weybridge), at speed making a wonderful roar! (the loco, not me). Likely to have been my only decent run with the loco. Needed "Sooty" Saunders style of driving to make it perform.

We used to call it the Milk Marketing Board machine, (she's an old crate!).

Unless I'm very much mistaken no rebuilt Bulleid gained a
Giesel ejector. I'm certain enough to put money
on it. The nameplates and crest style were unique to
the loco in that the crest was rotated through 90
degrees compared to other BBs and the shape and style
of the nameplates was unique to 34090. Perhaps that's
the difference that's stuck in the back of your memory bank.

Definitely only 34064 in BR days. Here are a couple of photos by John Neave:

No, it was a different noise, not appearance.

Maybe it really was an old crate! And sounded like one.
