Seems sensible to me that as the gala largely caters for the enthusiasts , for star turn locos to be marketed on specific trains outside the galas for a different market.

If, like me, you have been a supporter of the NYMRE for 50+ years, and still wants it to succeed, you might be co0ncerned that these "special" trains will sufficient custom to be sufficiently viable. Will the "Treat packs", for example, prove to be worthwhile? It isn't a question that's easy to answer, as it is not made clear what the pack contains! For all the reader knows it might be a small catering pack of shortbread biscuits. To me, the point is that if you are trying to sell a premium product it is necessary to spell out what the "premium" add-on consists of!

And now it starts to get personal! How grown up to just tell people who disagree with you that they should just go away. Why should you be in charge of who posts on here?

You don't have to post every opinion about everything on here, particularly as they are consistently negative and do little to support the railway which you claim to support.

Why do *you* feel the need to spin out your obvious dislike of the NYMR, with so many posts questioning so many things?

As others have said, it's time for you to move on. Or at least give others who have different opinions the opportunity to contribute to this thread without fear of being slapped down.

I doubt this person dislikes the NYMR; I doubt fairly strongly that that's the motive for their frequent posting. In fact, quite the opposite; I would guess that the NYMR is fairly special to them, and that's why they post so much. I reckon the problem is that they have decided (along with quite a few other people, like the person who cancelled that large legacy, for one example) that the line, on its current organizational course, is headed for a financial melt-down - which is probably a painful conclusion for someone who does care deeply about the line.

I mean, I too share that conclusion - but I can calmly sit back and mostly quietly watch it happen, precisely because I don't care that deeply about the line (unlike, I suspect, the OP you are complaining about). I won't lose any sleep when it piles into the buffer stop. Mind, I don't want it to fail; but I don't think there's anything I can do to help stop that from happening. (Which had to be what that legator decided.)

I reckon the OP doesn't know what to do to prevent what they see as a likely disaster (and I think they've got that right, about preventing it); so they probably post here for a variety of reasons, including as an outlet for their frustration - and maybe the horse will learn to sing, and some of the bad decisions they point out will be reversed.

Here's a closing observation for you: when people stop griping here about what they see as bad decisions on the line, it will be because they have given up caring what happens.

Most forums have rules against back seat moderation. Your posts have added little to discussion of matters NYMR but for reasons well explained by @jnc have ignored the motivations underlying @60044’s posting.

For what it’s worth, I tend to agree with @60044 on the weaknesses of NYMR management and governance, especially around cost control, and believe that they threaten the viability of the railway. I see evidence of this in the income of the railway, its seemingly random pricing policy, the communication of appeals, and the increasing signs that it can’t afford to keep up with the repairs required. With the refusal to recognise some of the innate assets, and drift away from being able to sell more than Whitby, these are structural weaknesses.

I don’t fully agree with all of his suggestions, nor do I share his bleakness of view when things are done well - credit deserves to be given too. But a reset is required, and that does need to come from the top.

I very much share @60044’s concerns about the NYMR. Where we do tend to differ is that I’m not calling for people to go, simply for them to change their direction and approach. However, I fear that this won’t happen until some people do go. And, if that happens, who will want to hold the poisoned chalice?

Whilst by no means an exhaustive study, my impression of the posts @richards tends to make is that they are routinely critical towards fellow posters whilst ignoring the particular subject matter.

The point that I made upthread remains. Constantly slagging people off is not going to change anything or make any of the NYMR management go "Yeah, fair enough, I'm doing a crap job. I think I'll just walk away from my income because some enthusiasts on a forum think I'm useless." We're all human and how would you, @Steve or indeed @60044 like it if you were being continually slated?

Good motivations mean nothing if they're expressed as continual rants and then taking aim at anyone who doesn't happen to agree with the way those motivations are expressed. There's a very old truism that the empty vessel always makes the loudest noise. And given the (repeatedly) stated 50 years membership, it comes across to the outside world very much as an old man shouting at clouds. It won't achieve anything, other than getting people's backs up. If that's 'back seat moderation', so be it.

A little self-awareness can go a long way. But I look forward to the inevitable apopleptic response. Sigh...

I can think of another heritage railway in the south west that suffered for some time with over-exposure on NP of its weaknesses in management. I hope that the NYMR is not heading in that direction.

Apologies if this has been discussed at length elsewhere but I do wonder about the value of the 'day out to Whitby from Pickering' model giving the length of the trip. It strikes me that people who are holidaying in Whitby would quite like a 'steam visit to the NYMR' option. But I notice that two steam services are available - 10:00 and 14:10 - from Whitby, and two to return - (09:15!) and 13:25.

Obviously I know what is going on here plus the one-way service train option, but if you are at Whitby (2 million visitors a year apparently) and want a steam ride up to Grosmont and back, there is just one option - 10:00 out and back at 13:25. My question is "How many tickets are sold for this?" I ask because on the WSR, holidaymakers at Minehead will opt for a ride out to Watchet and back, rather than the whole line. So, logically, seeking out an equivalent option from Whitby and one that is price competitive to fill up the 10:00 and 13:25 makes sense.

I hope the NYMR management has data on this.

Think it has been discussed at length, that paths, and stabling stock are the issue at Whitby.

I don't disagree, which is why I try to play the ball rather than the man (others can judge my success). But there's a difference between your observation, and those of @richards, in that you do at least accept the legitimacy of a discussion about how a railway is managed and run.

It has. Though, accepting this and the near impossibility of pathing a day out in Pickering, there is perhaps a question about how well the attractions of Grosmont and Goathland, and the journeys to them, (roughly equivalent to Watchet in your example) are being marketed.

I agree. In the red timetable there is also the 1235 from Whitby so there are two journey opportunities a day giving a couple of hours in Goathland. There is actually something to market from the Whitby end in the summer months.

Interesting email from the railway this morning, their lineup of 'rockstar' locomotives for the Summer and into Autumn: 60163, 4079, 60007 - but no mention if any are in use for the autumn gala.

We take breaks in and around Whitby every few years. One constant is walking Goathland to Gromont via Beckhole. The ability to do this by train from Whitby is something we would definitely use.

    Here's my issue.
Today: Return from Whitby to Grosmont by service train - £4.90
Today: Return from Whitby to Grosmont by NYMR service - £14.95. (Choosing the one stop adult return)

So I want to take the family to Grosmont from Whitby, look at what is there and return. How do I do it given I have a choice of trains?

The typical non-enthusiast family of adult and two children is going to find the service train option rather more compelling, I suggest, as they still get to see the trains at Grosmont.
