Rother Valley Railway

This one here on the Taieri Gorge tourist line near Dunedin doesn't look like it will be replaced any time soon (taken last year).

Gisborne Airport may be the only runway/railway level crossing left but I remember leaving Peshawar to go up the Khyber Pass line. Just on the edge of town was the combined military/civilian airport and we had to wait for the authorities to give us clearance as the line crossed the runway. Given the sensitive security situation at the time (1994) photography was forbidden at the airport, a real pity as I was on the leading loco going out. I remember Fred Youell from My Chappel and Wakes Colne days, I'm rather glad that he saved the N7.

I'd be worried about the traffic holding the railway up.

Back to the subject of work at the RVR; several more updates:

• Bridge 24 - 33 The track gets bolted down
• Section 5c - Track conditioning RVR Volunteers
• Passing Loop -6 Late Aug '26

So exciting to see this all happening, after all the years of organization, background and preparation! Does anyone know what the plan is for the bridge just past the Northbridge Street level crossing (I think this is Bridge 11, but a Web search didn't turn up much about it)? That's the next step along the line from Robertsbridge.

Thanks Noel,

The next construction in the area you mention around Northbridge Street will be our earthworks contractor working across the C350m long field section between Northbridge Street crossing and A21. That comprising construction of an embankment along with several new culverts underneath the railway formation.

Bridge No. 6 (not No. 11) right next to Northbridge Street level crossing will follow later this year. That after the our other half of our contractors team has rebuilt two small bridges just west of the old Salehurst Halt along with further trackbed. That will then subsequently enable further track laying westward from the current laid railhead (just east of Salehurst) in the direction of Robertsbridge.

Ah, I see where I went wrong. I was looking for a list of bridges on the RVR, and could only find Maps & Features. It's a very useful page (I have bookmarked it), but I managed to mis-read it, and got the A21 and Northbridge Street mixed up; Bridge 11 seems to be the first bridge after the A21.

I have to get used to a line which has contractors doing so much!

Looking at the Maps & Features page, the connected line (from Robertsbridge) will of course only be extended substantially when the A21 level crossing is done (scheduled for December, IIRC). Are there any plans in place for the installation of the level crossing of Junction Road at the other end? A web search for "Junction Road level crossing" turned up pretty much only the RVR TWAO Application (although Facebook did have an image of the crossing bases, waiting their turn to be installed).

@jnc - In the August update video Mike said Junction Rd. crossing works are planned for the end of October; and the A21 crossing hoped for in the spring of '27.
