North Norfolk Railway General Discussion

Nice if wet day at the NNR today. It is their Festival on Rails so they've got a lot of their toys out the box, so got to ride in the both quad arts and the Wisbeach and Upwell carriage for the first time, stunningly restored and maintained. Did the workshops tour, the N2 looked stunning but is out of service with a broken spring which is a complex custom job to replace. Slightly odd having the 4mt on the Victorian set, the train was only about twice as long as the loco, but I'm sure the crew appreciated the amount of protection they had from the rains that finally came.

 

Furness Railway No. 20 announced as the visiting locomotive for the Autumn Gala in late October, running with the vintage train. Also staying for the following half term week. https://nnrailway.co.uk/britains-oldest-working-loco/

 

This will be a fairly rare opportunity for a complete 19th-century-built formation to run on the line. Whilst often marketed as the Victorian train, it's usually hauled by 20th century locomotives!

Not often the NNR gets a visitor older than the Y14

 

I just looked up the construction date of No. 564, it's surprisingly late! I had it in my mind as Victorian.

If you want some Victorian motive power, we've got a couple of quite colourful ones I'm sure we'd be prepared to loan out for a gala

I believe it’s public knowledge now that the WD has had an extension to its boiler ticket taking it through to January 2028.

Must be handy as I believe 4277 will be leaving next year? Thought the return of the B12 and Ring Haw could be on the horizon

 

90775's extension is until mid October 2027. Ring Haw will be the next loco to be outshopped.

The Y14s do basically look of an age with the Adams 395 class they were roughly contemporary with on introduction. I also had not realised construction carried on intermittently for 30 years, or that 564 was such a late example.

Very interesting/unusual visitor

 

FR 20 faces towards Holt. Will be doing 2 trips on the vintage coaches each day at this coming weekend (first one starts at Weybourne), then one trip on the quad art set with Wissington on the rear.
Then 26th to 1st November it is down to do the first two trips per day on the vintage set, I presume another locomotive must be doing the last vintage run of the day.

 

I believe the other locomotive during the week will be Wissington.

 

A mention in latest Joint Line about a potential inspection of Black Prince for overhaul, with assessment of possible costs and viability.

Could this be the first small steps on the long road in getting BP back into service? Or potentially see BP staying at Bressingham long term?

 

If they did decide to restore Black Prince, do you know where this would be done, please?

I know that they do have a workshop at Bressingham (I've been in it!), but it has never seemed to me to be very big, certainly not big enough for a 9F? The shed that currently holds the loco is an exhibition shed, so I doubt that it would be feasible to do the work in situ - although this, of course, may depend on what needs to be done? Alternatively, would it go back to the North Norfolk Railway?

Pure speculation but I assume if an overhaul of BP were to go ahead it would be undertaken, at least partly, at Weybourne.

This seems like the first, small, tentative steps to see if an overhaul is feasible.

I’d still imagine that it would be dependent on funds being raised and workshop availability. Ring Haw, the B12, Y14 and 76084 will probably all return to service long before BP I would think.

This is what Mr W Pedia says about 92203:
"Sidelined in December 2023 with leaks in the main internal steam pipe and withdrawn in March 2024. Currently on display at the Bressingham Steam Museum until space and the funds are available to overhaul the loco."

I'm not in any way an expert on this matters, so I don't know what this description actually means. Can anyone tell me whether this is long or a short process, please? I saw her at Bressingham in April last year, but I don't remember whether there was any information about the future.
