Surprised there isn't a thread for these already.

Had a great trip yesterday from Dublin to Dundalk and return behind 171. A inside cylinder 4-4-0 makes a hell of a racket when hitting 70mph with load eight, far more exciting than the majority of British tours I've done. Apparently the bar car had never been so busy, and an orderly queue formed at the stations for footplate visits . A smart business model in that the rip started at 11, rather than the crack of dawn, and lasted a couple of hours each way so enough time to enjoy it without the kids getting too bored. It was also savvy that the train actually ran a second trip, with a short return run from Dundalk back to Drogheda for people not local to Dublin, or for those not wanting to spend four hours in Dundalk.

They are running 171 out from Dublin to Thurles in a few weeks which still has tickets available. Dublin is super easy and usually affordable to get to from British airports, so it's well worth the trip over.
