    1st March - Ilfeld viaduct shuts for what is believed to be 6 months for repairs so too and from Nordhausen is not accessible. As such they’ve ammended the offering on the Harzquerbahn and steam is minimal on it.

    Later this year - the Selketalbahn shuts for an undefined period but rumoured to be 2-6 years, for construction of a new dam and other work. It is unsure whether it will open in its current form again.

    Harzgerode - this branch has been shut since spring 2025 for engineering and still shows no sign of reopening.

    Generally - The cost cutting measures they need to put in
    Place make it unlikely that post 2026 it will be anything like what it has been, even now it’s partially a shadow of its former self.

    After breakfast, we depart from Erfurt Central Station with locomotive 52 7409 and travel along the main line via Gotha to Eisenach. Passing Wartburg Castle, we climb to Förtha and continue to Wernshausen. There, locomotive 64 518 joins us as a pusher engine, and together we travel the winding and steep route to Schmalkalden and on to Zella-Mehlis. From there, we ascend to Oberhof and, after passing through the Brandleite Tunnel, descend to Arnstadt. For the final kilometers back to Erfurt, locomotive 23 058 takes over, arriving in Erfurt, our overnight stop, in the late afternoon. Overnight stay in Erfurt.
