I've done a comparison for the 2 KGX to York trips in Nov.

LSL KGX to York 16th Nov takes just over 5 hrs 15 minutes. Passengers have 3 and a half hours in York and are due back at KGX at 2150.

RTC KGX to York 21st Nov takes just over an hour longer at 6 hrs 20 minutes. Passengers have 3 hours in York and are due back at KGX at 2318.

It looks to me as though the difference is to do with a 60 mph path v a 75 mph path.

LSL uses 75 mph locos and 75 mph paths. WCR cannot guarantee 75 mph locos as at present they use Black 5s and generally they always have 60 mph paths, even if the loco up front is a Bulleid.

And that's before we start talking about overloaded trains where the necessary diesel has to work in tandem with the loco up front.

These are business and operational decisions but they do spell out differences that the market can choose to react to, or not.

Doesn't seem long ago to me when KX to York with steam was not much more than 4 hours. Don't bother telling me why it's no longer possible; I know why, just dreaming!

When the journey will take longer, for whatever reason, there may be a trade-off between a very early starting time and too little time at the destination, though the early start may be the only way to find a path between all the regular traffic.
