Would that be the I MechE paper by Roger Waller; Modern Steam: An environmental and economical alternative to Diesel Traction?

The figures were interesting, they also used electric powered external boilers, which ran on low tariff energy, to preheat the water overnight.
I went on a technical visit there, most interesting and Roger was very enthusiastic about the possibilities.
Alas photos and the copy of the paper have disappeared during house moves and downsising.

    Some interesting details here

I just loaded up the webcams for the first time in a while to see Repton and 44806 standing in the station. Slightly confused I then checked the roster to see first all steam for this year (I believe)! But something is amiss, where is Omaha? Its 10:40 and its not in Grosmont? The Black 5 shows no sign of moving out of the platform, suggesting Omaha isn't close. Its the mystery of the disappearing S160!

EDIT: Now arrived at Goathland 10:47. Will the first Whitby train be in time for the path!

EDIT 2 - Arrived Grosmont 11:03, then departed for Whitby with 44806 at 11:12. I'm surprised the signaller let it go to Whitby though. Northern Rail are timed at Glaisdale (and running on time) at 11:27 so I'd imagine it would have to be held there until 44806 is at Whitby? A bit tight!

I've no idea what caused the delay. Omaha seemed ok to the untrained eye but obviously the timetable is shot now. Such a shame with finally getting steam to see issues arise.

Yes I think that was probably the one. I've also been on a visit there, although not an official one. After a wonderful run up the Rothorn (behind a proper coal fired loco) in freezing fog, where it was essentially just the train crew and me, they gave me a guided tour of the workshops before I got the train back to wherever I was staying. I really must pay a repeat visit sometime (maybe not in freezing fog).

    Morning everyone,
Planning a long overdue visit next weekend to the NYMR, is it possible to jump off one service and get on the other at Levisham (15:30 31/10)?
Timetable has both trains departing at 15:30 but seems a bit tight. I know the train can’t depart until token exchanged, but can depend on how quickly this is done. Thanks for any advice.

99% of crossings of trains work on a last in - first out basis due to the token having to be put through the instrument and all the other requirements of signalling. If you are on the first arrival you should have time to cross to the other platform before the second train arrives as the route has to be set. Similarly, if on the second train you should be able to cross over to the other platform as again the route has to be set. Be in the north end coach ready to get off. The pedestrian crossing gates are not interlocked so use common sense when crossing.

Interesting jaunt out on 44806 today on the 15:10 from Pickering to Whitby and back.

It was both interesting and surreal to travel in pitch black for the duration of the return trip in particular.

what was also interesting that the she took the train back to Pickering instead of swapping out for a diesel (usually a 37) at at Grosmont. One wonders why, as the ghost train is not running this eve. Will the loco simply stable at that end Pendennis Castle? It has t been the done thing this year.

Anyway regardless of that fantastic trip.

Well I'm on it on the 09.20 in the morning, my 11th turn on this particular train this season and the first to produce a steam loco (at last:)). Might have something to do with the need to heat the early train at this time of year.

Two very busy days at NYMR .
Many Whitby trains had plenty of passengers standing and even the first train ex Whitby had no empty bays by Grosmont .

How much revenue will not be earned in the next two days ?

4079 on Alleleys trailer this afternoon .

Sounds good for income. However the NYMR’s CDL exemption says that they can’t carry more passengers over the EVL than there are seats. I wonder if they try and enforce it or just ignore it?

That could be seen as evidence that the five operating day a week strategy is working. The aim should be to fill trains with passengers paying fares that reflect the cost of running a long line. It was always clear that most visitors would adjust to travelling on days when the railway is running trains. Some revenue may be forfeit from not operating on other days but chasing revenue alone is a fools errand. What matters is generating a surplus which is more likely with full trains on five rather than 7 day operating days outside the peak season.

It could but it's also half term. Also overcrowding is never a good look. Also however wasn't the stated aim of the five out of seven policy, to reduce wear on assets?

There is nothing like seeing what you want to see, is there. If you had been there this week there was widespread comment among the staff that the current set up is crazy. Why force people to travel in uncomfortable over crowded conditions on some days and then not operate on the following days. A perfect example of the muddled thinking of a management who seem not to understand needs of the service that they are trying to provide. The good news is that I understand that next year there will be a seven days a week service dyring school half terms.

Keighley have 41241 and 75078 out today and tomorrow while NYMR is shut.

Are trains running as load 7 to Whitby?

The objective is fine. @torgormaig sums up my view of what it is to turn good demand away; I just find it incredible that there is a willingness to turn away profitable business, and the opportunity to put cash in the bank.

    Recent Google review:

We arrived today for the first train of the day got on found a seat .There were too many tickets sold as a lot of people had to stand the whole two hrs to Whitby. There wasn’t entirely ugh time to enjoy our visit because the train was 14.10 back unless you wanted to stay till 5pm.When we returned to the train back again too many people on the train .My husband and son had to stand all the way back to Pickering. Please tell me how you can enjoy the experience and the scenery when you are standing between the carriages.I would not recommend goin on this service in school holiday times unless they put more trains or carriages on.We paid £130 for the three of us not worth the money next time we will drive
