    The Gurktalbahn is where?

Well, 1 hour north of Klagenfurt, but conveniently reached on direct trains from Vienna over the Semmering Railway, well those that avoid Graz and the new high speed Koralmbahn!

Limited to just 3 km in length because of a wide federal road beyond its northern terminus, the Gurktalbahn is also one of the oldest preserved railways in Austria. It has a short season of Sundays only from early July to early September, but is main line connected at Treibach-Althofen OBB station.

A pleasant ride and the railway does have a bar car, 4 different tank engines and a fancy palace/castle at its terminus that in 1945 and afterwards served as a British Army HQ in the British zone of occupation in southern Austria.

So plenty of steam and history to discover, while riding along at Gurktalbahn through fields and forests, as seen below.
