News of the final weekend of 2027 service trains and for visitor 45110. <BJ>

    Farewell to the Black 5
We’ve had an amazing six months with this beautiful locomotive, and this weekend is your last chance to travel behind her.
She’ll run with the genuine 1968 1T57 headcode, generously loaned for the event by a volunteer and private railwayana collector. 1T57 was the headcode carried on 11 August 1968 by the Fifteen Guinea Special, the last steam-hauled passenger train run by British Railways, and 45110 was one of the engines that worked it.
As we say goodbye to the Black 5 we also say goodbye to our standard running season. After this weekend we’ll be hunkering down to get the trains ready for Santa’s arrival
Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November. Book at gwsr.com or buy on the day in one of our many booking offices

It is indeed and I have one of the other ones! I think there were three (all 1T57, which was the train's reporting number throughout, carried by 45110, 70013 and 44871, as lead Black 5)) and mine was carried by 44871. It's quite distinctive, as the 5 numeral is smaller and actually began the day as 0T57, when the locos ran light from Lostock Hall to Carlisle.

Its provenance is quite interesting, in that it was still on board the loco, in the fire-iron tunnel, when it returned to Carnforth from Lostock Hall, early on the morning of 12th August. Peter Beet, who had already bought and paid for the loco a week previously, gave to one of his Steamtown volunteers, who in turn passed it on to me about 20 years ago. It still very much 'ex-loco' and the pasted on letters are quite fragile, hbut it as been reunited with 44871 a couple of times, on the anniversary runs of 1T57.

With reference to 45110, strictly speaking by 11/08/68, 45110 had lost its smokebox number plate and the door hinge-straps had been painted white, but were hurriedly painted black again, when it was resurrected at the 11th hour to replace 45305, the booked loco, which had been failed with a collapsed grate.

I might just re-unite the two headboards at the weekend....

Thanks for your reply - very interesting. Looking forward to seeing 45110 at the weekend. <BJ>

You won't see much of it - both piston glands are leaking quite badly.

I was hoping that had been cured. We visited the railway last weekend as the loco had been rostered. Unfortunately, it was under maintenance throughout the day. <BJ>
