Llangollen shed newsy news

I can't see it happening to be honest. The Grange has a good support base, they are delivering on the build, have great fundraising initives and have a large number of expensive components. If I'm correct in my thinking, the Grange has most of its wheels, its boiler, its frames, cab and tender. With the exception of cylinders, most of the missing bits have been made in preserfation for other GWR locos. The Patriot by comparison has very few major components, and doesn't have the support base history that the Grange has. There is an aweful lot more to building the locomotive than choosing a good name and buying the frame plates.
Good luck to them, but my bet is that the Grange will be out well before the Patriot.

The wheels are under the SVR's mogul since they have a spare set from the large prairie that was cut up at Barry. The boiler is sitting down at the carriage works and are bogie wheels are down at the south devon being looked at and what not. And we have most of the inside motion.

The next challenge is the extension frames then the cylinders (Which we have the drawing for now).

Where getting there but still need you support to build the 81st Grange

 

so are you fabricating the cylinders or playing with dirty lumps of iron?

Thanks for posting the pic of 2807 ready to go. It will be great to see it reunited with its boiler again. I understand that testing will commence in September. I have waited 25 years for this so I guess I can wait just a little longer! I think we will be having a new thread on this subject soon.

 

I'm down at Toddington this weekend as work starts again on the tender now the frames are off to Llan. We also have working parties set for late July and Aug for our team to also work at Llan. We all hope too that this year sees 2807 back in steam or very much ready to steam early next year.

We have lots to do and i'm sure many unknown challenges on the way. But its getting very exciting!!! \/

 

So that will make three western 2-8-0's on site then!

Well sort of anyway. 3802 is yet to be reunited with its newly refurbished wheels...

I'd guess that makes it an 0-0-0 at the moment!

 

Hopefully the presence of another Churchward 2-8-0 on site will inspire somebody to restore ours (2859)
This would probably been steaming by now but for the misguided opinion of one person ,who decided that a small prairie would be a better proposition. The small prairie is still many years away from steaming, yet 2859 had a heavy general 6 months before withdrawal. I believe that the group already has many parts for 2859 ,including the motion. Is anybody interested ?

Am I correct in saying that 2859 was the last engine to be overhauled at Wolverhampton Works around 1964? I am sure I have seen a picture of it in the works at this time.

I understand 2859's boiler is in "very good condition" for its age and history. I use the term in inverted commas because we all know that a boiler overhaul is a serious wallet stripper for any locomotive owning group. However, when I visited Llangollen for the SSS Gala, I met someone from Llangollen shed who informed me that 2859's boiler was one of the best of the bunch and was really the one that should have been picked before many others but for some confusion with the boiler reports. I would be very interested in owning 2859 myself but since I cannot afford to live a life in a garden shed for the rest of my life at my age I would perhaps consider chipping in with some others. Now when 2807 is up and running.....? After all, we've nearly done one, after that it's easy isn't it?! I don't think 2807's owners would want another one even if we could afford it but perhaps some of us could investigate the art of the possible.

 

The owning group of 2859 are looking to sell her to raise funds for the boiler overhaul on the small prairie. They have done (and are continuing to do) an excellent job of fund-raising.The main problem is that most of them are getting on a bit & would like to see one loco finished pretty quickly. The only way of achieving this is to sell the other one. The 2-8-0 was indeed the last loco overhauled at Stafford Road. I did hear a tale that when the Severn Valley were inspecting the 28's at Barry they got the boiler reports mixed up & bought 2857 instead of 2859. Can anybody from the S.V.R. confirm this ?

The Project Team are thinking about what to do once the 2807 is in service, but we are realistic that the first year will be one issues and challenges, fixes and setbacks(but not to big!!).

Some of us, me, are looking to get involved with the loco department at the GWSR. But 2807 will always take first place.

 

I heard that one somewhere or other.

 

So has it!! a little big to lose!!

I imagine they'll be using foxcotes tender for the running in. It'll be good to see her up and running since there are so few operational GWR 28's.
