You must remember that railway history didn't start until 1948! :-k

The sdr has 2 other engines running in gwr green though so it evens things out with one gwr set of coaches and one br custard and cream set! I personally like to see variety so having 50/50 gwr/br is great and it pleases most people.

You can always come to Brignorth and see 2 57xx panniers in green, one with the full GREAT WESTERN on the tank, the other G W R . However, I see you live in New Zealand so it's not likely that you could pop in that often. Still, when you do come you will be most welcome. We had a chap fly over from Canada last year, just for the Autumn Gala. New Zealand's not that much further. Well, it is actually, but you get my drift!

What a charmer you are . A forgotten loco is given a new coat of paint and many are interested again and you equate it with a funeral . I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but choice of words could be so much better

Ah yes now there's a thought, would be very nice to see something different on a pannier for a change, after all it is authentic and they do wear the maroon LT livery well. But I suppose it would be too much for the GWR brigade to cope with ;-)

I think the new livery looks quite smart once the finishing touches are added she'll be a very good addition to the Gala lineup, especially facing the other way will make for some very different photos.

Personally I'm sure she'll fire, drive and sound the same as she always has and is even being booked for Photo Charters so wheres the harm in it being painted black, anyway as has been mentioned elsewhere she'll be out of traffic soon so we'll have to see which colour she comes back with.

You mistake my words. I didn't equate it to a funeral, i asked if it was going to one, the reason being the colour, which is commonly equated with mourning.

I object to it being in BR black because I love pre-nationalisation liveries. I know this isn't a common thing, and that you photogrpahers are rarely interest in locos unless they are in BR livery, but I prefer the opposite.

I'd like to congratulate the Worcester Locomotive Society for keeping her in green for so long, they've done the Great Western proud. Again I look forward to her being in green again, and i hope that the photographers will be more interested in railway history pre 1948.

Thank you for that. I'm very pleased the SVR is keeping the GWR alive. Hopefully, when I do finally get back, there will be at least one manor (hopefully 3), a real Collett mogul and a number of other engines in GW green. Bring back the 70s and 80s when virtually everything was in pre-nationalisation colours.

As far as I know wartime black was only used for those locos actually repainted during 1940 - 1945. After the war those locos that originally carried green reverted to green when they were repainted. (If indeed they were repainted before 1948) Therefore there is a strong possibility that most 57xx panniers stayed green for the duration, if looking a tad unkempt. Indeed, at some sheds it would have been impossible to say what colour was underneath all the grime! There is a photo by the late R.C. Riley of a 57xx in pre war green, taken in 1963 I believe!

She will be in gwr black for the first few days of the 40th gala and probaly again for future events i beleive! You cant please everyone with a livery but i think after 30 odd years the people that wanted to see it in green have had their chance!

Painting engines black started in the spring of 1942, but it didn't completely stop once the war had ended; having just been through a major disruption, and no doubt still suffering from continuous supply problems, you can't exactly 'switch' overnight. Swindon was still turning out some lesser engines (panniers etc) in black during the middle of 1946, I don't think Wolverhampton began painting any engines in green until sometime during 1947.

'Course like you say, a lot of engines would've never even seen a paintbursh while all this was going on! But it would certainly do to have a few more black engines out there... well, GWR black anyway.

RE: LT livery, a reason this has seen so little airing in preservation maybe to do with the fact it did sweet FA with passenger stock in this condition and if LT operated then anything like it does today they would have operated during the night out of hours for the most part meaning the number of people to see them was relatively small.

This weekend sees the Worcester locomotive Society (owning group of 5786) holding a members day at the South Devon Railway with 5786.
The event is organised to encourage further support for the society, promote the membership growth and allow its members a chance to get up close and personal with their loco which is now wearing its new BR black early livery. and still currently facing Totnes.
It is hoped to run the 57 with matching ex GWR Blood & Custard livery coaching stock on 4 round trips opposite the main service with the train being a fish & chip train.

proceeds from the event will go towards restoration projects, shortly to be focusing on the overhaul of 0-6-0 ST 'Carnarvon' ex- Stewarts & Lloyds quarries loco.

I'd just like to say major kudos to the owners group for applying the GWR transfers during the '40s weekend, it's a point I like to see (As per an earlier thread regarding post-45 locos and stock on '40s weekends) most of the time of course it's wholly unavoidable to run anachronistic stock as thats all there is at the time, but it was a nice gesture!
