Although I used the word "could", reading the article again, it gives the impression that they are definate dates.

There's nothing definite in the loco overhaul world. So many imponderables, particularly where suppliers and contractors are concerned.

Beg to disagree on that, it almost invariably takes longer than planned/expected to complete an overhaul!

Talking to a loco department volunteer, shortly after 76017 was withdrawn from service, the main areas needing attention were, if my memory serves me correct:

1: Smokebox, the existing one is life expired.
2: Tender Tank, also life expired.
3: Loco and tender tyres need turning.
4: Rectification work to correct damage that occurred at Whitchurch when loco derailed down the embankment under BR ownership, ie: slightly bent pony truck and boiler that does not fit squarely in the frames.
5: Cylinder rebore with new valve heads, pistons and rings.

Plus all the usual work. Boiler overhaul, fittings, frame repairs, brakegear rebushing, axleboxes and motion repairs ect... ect...

Quite a bit to do in 2.5 years, but if they get cracking soon it could be acheivable.

Remember everything is there, however it all needs refurbishing.

If thats the case I would love to see them build a high sided tank as fitted to later versions of SR batches (76053 to 76069)

If the MHR paint 76017 and the Std 4 in the same colour, could you not swap the tenders around occasionally once both are complete?

Well any or those who are about to be out of work - Then this could be achieved???? Volunteers and $$$$'s....

Would be great to see these 2 locos running on the line once again! And if so, then with the 45379 and 92212 and 34007, then this would get the railway looking healthy with some fine locos once more!!

as both types of engine (75xxx &76xxx) used the same design of tender, they should keep with the current type fitted to 76017, and order a high sided version for the 75xxx and just change them around when they want to, as for paint colour, were any of the southern engines painted green? because wasnt it the former western engines that recieved the passinger green livery, so if you want to have interchangable tenders both will have to be in lined black as none of the mogols recieved the green livery

If my rather shaky memory serves me well, these two locos are facing in opposite directions.

The plan (well the last one before it gets changed again) is for the 75XXX to have a high sided tender (I hope that it doesn't in the end). I sincerely hope that 76017 keeps it's low sided one. The high sider is ugly (subjective personal opinion) but more importantly MUCH less practical for a preserved railway where the loco spends 50% of it's time traveling backwards!

In other words it's very similar to a Stanier 4000 gallon tender. Any comments on that?

As for practicality that is true, but with 76079, 76084 both with the smaller style tender (and 76077 unlikely to steam any time soon) it would look different, and as the MHR have many high side tender locomotives (Bittern, 92212, all the bulleid's, even cut down versions are 'high' and 75079 is planned to have a BR1B) I can see that as much of an issue.

I'm sure the owners of 76017 will replicate the BR2 style as this locomotive always was paired with one but I like (again subjective and personal opinion) the SR based 4MT moguls paired with a high sided version... maybe I will have to wait for 76077!

You can still see the scars/damage on the tender of 76017 from when she came to grief on the DN&S at Whitchurch on 23 September 1954.

Would it be the same tender? I doubt it as it would have had several overhauls since then plus its Barry episode, I don't think many engines came out of Barry with the same tenders they went in with (if any at all). I think someone has already mentioned on here that 76017 has 76077's old tender.

I was told some time ago that its the same tender that was in the accident and plus reading Kevin Robertson book about the DN&S on page 64 he confirms that it’s the same tender? Maybe someone else could confirm this or put the record straight.
