    Excellent - hopefully we can make it up tomorrow if family plans work out that way.

    Assuming we do make it we'll try and come over for a chat before 2pm and then plan on a ride before we disappear.

    Thanks for the updates.

    (My real name is Dave by the way if it helps make the connection when we come over!)

    I will be driving the railcar on the 29th August.

    The Bar Car will be open for the consumption of a wonderful selection of great Ales over the course of the weekend, so if you would like to pop down and see the Railcar in operation just come up and say hi, I am sure that my other driver and I will be able to show you how the old girl works. I may also be driving on Monday, where the Bar Car will still be open, I will let you know at a later date

    Without referring to the archive, but what AEC engine type does it have, and is is still Indirect Injection, or has it been converted to Direct?

    Just a reminder that the Railcar will be operating over the 3 days of the August Bank Holiday weekend. I will be driving her on the 29th, so if you wish to come down and have ride on her, and sample a rather nice selection of Ales from the Bar Car, as that will be open all 3 days. And not to mention the added bonus of the Real Tornado no replicas allowed here Tornado being down at Didcot is I think very much subject to her railtour itinery, as she will be stabled at Didcot for about 3 weeks, and may operate trains on the Main Demonstration Line over the Bank Holiday Weekend, although at the moment, I have no idea how long she will be operating over the 3 days of the weekend

    I am sorry Eightpot I have only just seen this post

    She has 2 x AEC A182 Series Engines of 9.6 Litres & 105 BHP with 6 Cylinders which are very rare. They are direct Injection with Ricardo Heads.

    Hi

    She uses 2 X CAV.38.PE86B8C Fuel Pumps, and as the engines were bult in 1939 they have no Turbo, apprently there were only 400 A182 Series Engines Built. They were also used in the so called Pre War Batch of RT Bus. So called as only the first one was pre war, the rest were in service during 1940

    I am driving the Railcar tomorrow, and possibly Sunday as well, although I am not sure yet. So if anyone does pop down, come over and say Hi.

    Not only will you be able to ride behind Tornado, but you will also be able to sample a fine selection of Ales from the Bar Car, as it will be open all 3 days

    Still a bit puzzled over this engine description. By referring to 'Ricardo' heads in a earlier posting this implies that it is an 'Indirect Injection' engine, not 'Direct'. Are maximum revs 1900 or more like 2400? According to my information the 1st/early RT bus had A185, but AEC did use other numbers for such engines used for other applications.

    For a CAV injection pump I would have expected a code more like BPE6B80.

    I'd appreciate your kindly checking this out when you get a chance. Thanks.

    Hi Eightpot

    According to the GWR Railcar Bible The History of Grreat Western AEC Diesel Railcars, they are direct injection. They are rated at 105 BHP at 1650 RPM. You are quite right about the fuel pump they are CAV nubmer BPE6B80, there were so many part numbers in the Railcar book refereing to the fuel pump, that I wasn't sure which ones to use. I have since found out, that RT1 origianly had an A182 series engine, but this was replaced in late 1939 by an A185 I will get a bit mre info tomorrow, and post a picture of one of the Engines

    Thanks for the info. You may be interested in a breakdown of the BPE6B80 PUMP CODE:-

    B = British made.
    P = Pump
    E = Enclosed camshaft type
    6 = Number of pumping elements
    B = Pump size letter, in this case 10mm stroke plunger (A = 7mm stroke)
    80 = Element plunger diameter, in this case 8,0 mm dia. (plungers are in 0,5mm dia increments)

    Thanks for the photo. Definitely not a lorry or bus type sump on this engine.

    Thanks for the photo. Definitely not a lorry or bus type sump on this engine. Sump oilfiller in diffent place (normally on side of rocker box cover) and non original, but practical, fuel filter.

    You are right, the A182-185 Series engines have a normal type Bus or Lorry sump, but that would have reduced the clearence between the base of the sump, and the track, So the Engines used in the last 20 GWR Railcars had a redesigned sump, which was wider but more shallow, and because of its design, oil cooliing was introduced into the sump. There is a small oil cooling circuit in the sump, with a separate cooling circuit in the Radiator, and this is the lowest point in the cooling system. If you look at the picture there is a length of hose that goes into the sump on the right hand side of the picture.
