Here is a new 6201 thread. Whilst the engine is a passionate subject for some members please remember that your words will be read by people on both sides and by many people unconnected in anyway with this engine.
Also if engaging in a personal discussion between members please make sure it's not insulting or provocative.. factful discussion with proof / evidence or positive suggestions are the best way to win any argument...

Please use this thread for discussions about the current state, operations and future of the engine, but please refrain from insulting or degrading individuals.
Please read the extracts from the forum rules :
Not wishing to being heavy handed, but the moderators obviously have to do their job and messages contravening forum rules will be edited, or removed and in some cases investigated further, please dont take it personally, it's aimed to make a better forum.

If there are any questions, please use the PM button or open a report to discuss this, or a new topic even, rather than posting into this thread as it may only get this thread off to a bad start.

Everyone has an opinion about this engine and a good discussion is reccomended, let's hear it but lets keep it away from mess room banter which may be more relevent in "General Chat" or "Bullhead Memories" sections.

That's the officialdom over with... please lets discuss 6201 at your leisure.

Does anyone know why Simon (from 6233) was traveling as engineer on 6201 last saturday?

Neither Richard Watkin or Alan were available due to prior commitments so Simon Towell very kindly stepped into the breach.

In this quarters special PROPAGANDA issue of the 6201 Members Newsletter, there is no mention of the announcement made at the AGM (6/6/09) by Allan Scott (only appointed engineer in March 2009) that he had resigned from that position the previous week, while he remains with the society. The engineering mantle is taken over by the society's engineering contractors LNWR's Richard Watkins.

Once again, information is being withheld from the majority of its members, in fact unless you attended the AGM, you would not be aware of this important fact, something that the Chairman doesn't consider important enough to mention in his report!!!!!!

In a society, ALL members MUST be given a copy of the minutes to ALL meetings. These minutes must be ACCURATE. The minutes must be agreed and signed at the next meeting as "being a true record of what happened at the last meeting" There should therefore be no scope for ANY omissions! Its not rocket science

That is correct so far as it goes, but AGM minutes are frequently not issued until the notice of the next AGM, often ten months apart.

A lot of mushrooms can grow in ten months

Not so. Members should have access to copies of the minutes to GENERAL meetings, whether Annual or Extraordinary. It does not give them access to committee or other meetings. Furthermore, a Chairman's report can only cover facts up to the end of the year being reported, and does not necessarily cover events after the period in question. There may be significant matters that can be noted as happening after the year end that can be reported, but the resignation of a post holder may not necessarily fall into that category, regardless of how important that post is.

I appreciate there are some who have concerns about the PELS, and I do not know enough about the history to have a view. However it does seem to me that the Society is going through something of a turmoil, and all the angst being vented on this forum is doing nothing to help the Officers deal with a series of difficult problems. Why not let them get on with it and sort the problems out themselves?

Not so I'm afraid. It depends on the Society's constitution, or Articles of Association if it is a Limited Company. All members should be sent minutes of the previous AGM along with the notice of the forthcoming AGM but as for minutes of committee meetings/board meetings, it may be sufficient for them to be available for inspection at reasonable times. In the Societies to which I belong none have a requirement to send minutes of ordinary committee/board meetings to all members.

Ho hum, here we go again.
How long before people realise that what owners or groups do with Their Engine? Or the people they employ to look after it is none of our business?
Just be thankful that you aren't shaving with her remains or that the food you feed you cat or dog didn't come from cans made from her remains.
For gods sake, we are supposed to be about preservation. That doesn't mean that every loco, no matter how important has to be in perfect mainline running order. Take for instance Duchess Of Hamilton, she has been restored to as near as possible as built. Does that make her any less valuable as an artefact of our railway heritage than if she was running in her post war condition?
    I think not.
For gods sake get on with the business of Preservation and stop carping and back biting. It puts none of us in a good light.
And to you members of the 6201 Society on here. Keep your petty squabbles between yourselves. Airing them in public does our movement as a whole a disservice.

Couldn't agree more. All societies suffer at some stage from 'internal politics', but the emphasis is on internal; they are no-one else's business. If it were to happen within the SMF (and to forestall rumour, there isn't anything that I know of), there will be no postings here or in the magazines; we will sort it out ourselves without outside help - or interference.

    Totally agree with the above.

The best approach if you have a love of a particular engine is to bump into the crew at a steaming or water stop. If you're brief and to the point they will always want to natter, given the time. An exchange of phone nos/mobiles will bring dividends and keep things friendly.

As an aside, in my experience steam boys and girls aren't always keyboard bashers as well as crew members so be patient. \:D/

And that is exactly where my information comes from - those who funded the last overhaul, those who until recently were the workers, and a recent chat at the Ashton water stop with an old friend who has just joined up.

Most definitely horses mouth and not hearsay

The Grapevine is buzzing with news that No 9 has failed, the result being that 6201 is going to Scarborough on Fri 28/9. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks for the info, do we know if 6201 is covering any of 60009's trips in Sept, as I understand that she is having other work done while at Crewe?
