At the back of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, near HMS Victory, are three old railway wagons, as follows:

(*) 76145 5 Plank open, SR livery (brown / white lettering)
(*) 630569 Van, labelled "NE", (grey / white lettering)
(*) What looks like a cut down 5 plank open, with ends in situ but sides removed, labelled "SN50 For internal use only 8T" (Dark grey / white lettering)

Does anyone know what these are or who owns them? I can't find them on the Vintage Wagon Survey website, and though presumably they are preserved as part of the dockyard, there are no interpretative labels or placques, so they stand looking rather forgotten. (I've got photos if anyone is interested).

    Just curious...

    Thanks,

    Tom

They're probably old wagons left over from when ships needed coal. the owner of them is likely to be one of the following: the royal navy, the council, the royal navy museum, BVT or DE&S. the most approachable of these will probably be the royal navy museum (or looked after by them on behalf of the council), located in the large buildings south of Victory. To be honest, all the others wouldn't know what to do if you asked, as they're all vast organisations who wouldn't know what they were doing there. I found a 150 year old 30ft cutter in plymouth dockyard a few weeks back, along with a dozen 1840 vintage cannons. but the bureaucracy of these places makes tracing owners very difficult. good luck

I don't know who officially owns these but they are part of the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard collection. They are all that's left from the internal rail system. There was a 4w crane nr the East Gate area a few years ago but this seems to have vanished.
SNSO 217 was originally a 5pl open cut down sides to a flatbed truck of unknown origin.
76145 is a wooden frame LSWR origin, Eastleigh 1900c
630569 is an LNER I/d but of early GER Origin. Stratford 1910c
The open and van are in good condition and of very few examples still around.
These will be added to the VCT Wagon Survey when I get round to it. I want to get some photo's first before they go up.

For those that are interested, here are some photos - taken on 23 May 2009, but they were still there in the same place yesterday (31 August 2009).

(Steve - if you want them for the VCT website, let me know and I'll point you at high res versions).

It would save me a trip down there! If possible can you email them to me on.....
stevescb1966@live.co.uk with your name and date taken.
They can only be a maximum of 500 width but I can sort that out. You will be credited as the photographer.
    Cheers

I tracked these wagons down today whilst at the dockyard for an article on locoyard.com (http://locoyard.com/2014/05/07/wagons-of-portsmouth-dockyard/) and got to admit that the GER van is in need of some love. The paint is really flacking off it and due to there location they are really exposed to sea air. Have uploaded a couple of photos I didnt include in the quick article.
