As motoring columns go, one of the more unusual from Top Gear's James May - while Clarkson loves steam, James prefers a Type 2! In this case the NYMR's Class 24...

If I am correct in believing that D5061 was allocated to 34G in the mid-1960s, then I've worked on it.

Yup - part of D5050 - 5072 batch transferred from East Anglia during 1961 when replaced by Class 30 - later Class 31s after re-engining.

  6. Incidentally, it's incidentally, not incidentaly :)

The word diesel is only capitalised when referring to a proper name - i.e. Rudolf Diesel, Vin Diesel, Diesel clothing etc.

Yes diesel engines took the name from Rudolf's surname, but the word has passed into common parlance to describe a kind of engine, fuel, etc - therefore capitalisation is no longer necessary.

Does one do the Hoovering? No, it's hoovering. See what I mean? ;-)

Beg to differ. Messrs CAV who make Diesel fuel injection equipment always refer to "Diesel engines" in their publications. That's good enough for me.

The domestic appliance you refer to is a "Hoover", only the use of it could be described as "hoovering"'

If its any help (and it probably isn't!) 'Hyster' do not capitalise the word in their manual (It happens to be open on my desk now!)

  9. One manufacturer versus an entire language... OK, your choice. I've never seen any business ever make spelling, grammar or punctuation mistakes. No, not never, no... ;-) :)

Surely what is important is that everyone understood what was meant. Clear understanding being the most important thing! ;)

Returning to the orginal post - Mr May has a point doesn't he? I mean I love steam engines, and am privileged to get to work them a couple of times a month, but I am not sure that 5 days a week on them mightn't erode that love a bit. Mmmm, maybe not actually.....
